Practice Makes Perfect
March 20th, 2008

We started practicing for the upcoming tour and are aiming to have around 30 songs total to be able to have in rotation. We usually create a setlist or two having only a couple extra songs to pull in if we want to, but we’re trying to do things a bit different this time by having a giant pool of songs we pull songs out of. The point is to keep things fresh, interesting, and a bit more spontaneous. We’ll see how that goes…Anyhow, we’re breaking out some older songs we haven’t played in a long time, and of course, are learning songs off of Air & Earth as well.

Cheers,
Teppei

  10. Walter

Um…Have we gone so far out of our frikkin minds waiting for this cd that we resorted to counting … like in kindergarten… thrice fries our minds with their concepts and lyrics and then fries our minds by making us wait for the tour and this cd… im stoked but gosh poo are they a mind frying band.
    They fry minds.
    LIke french fries.
    *Mind frying as i speak*
    *sizzle*

  11. HAY

can’t wait to see thrice on conan.
they should play the flame deluge to kill everyone.

  12. Jorge

yeah, but my mind was just disintegrated upon reading this post, I think we had to ease ourselves into a regular posting mode upon reading the latest announcement, so much so that we started counting XD

  13. Kyle

    Please.

  21. kevin

when’s the merchdirect pre-order with the free t-shirt coming out?

  22. Logan

Nice!! How about I.D. Crisis, Deadbolt, Kill Me, Trust, Beltsville, So Strange, Betrayal, Silhouette, Cold Cash, Melting Point, Blood Clots, Abolition, Don’t Tell, Image, Earthshake, For Miles, Hold Fast, Music Box, Moths, Dust, Stand, Red Sky, and every song off the Alchemy Index.

there, now you don’t have to worry about making a set list anymore, I just made it.

  23. Vince

haha it sounds like you guys posted an update just to keep us crazy fans hanging off your every word

good show mates, good show ;)

  24. the guy who fell in the water

Snaps, when I saw “old songs” I wonder… Old as in Artist old? or good ol I.C. (even though a lot are retired.. i understand… :( ) illusion of safety would be awesome.. last time I saw you guys at Slims, you guys played Kill Me and Deadbolt. How about some… To awake and Avenge the Dead?
By far my favorite song that you guys wrote.

    cya at the Filmore.

  25. Mark

I wonder if you guys have ever considered a live DVD/CD thing. It’s something you guys haven’t done yet, and since you are so good at recreating your songs live it would be great don’t you think? You’ve been around for a while so you must’ve thought about it at least.

  26. Luke

I know that this was said to never be played again, but… T&C? Please? Can I get a what, what? Perhaps a when, when and a yes, yes? =D

Other than that, Hold Fast Hope, Trust and/or In Years to Come, Unquestioned Answers, So Strange I Remember You, The Abolition of Man? Love to see those old ones live =D

  27. Jason?

Do Thrice play The Flame Deluge live? I would LOVE to hear that live, that would make my head explode.

  28. kristen

    T&C.

    WHAT WHAT!

    haha =)

  29. Jason?

I want to see Lost Continent & The Flame Deluge live so bad, that would be so epic!

  30. sam

    26th

  31. Moony

wow thats gotta be the most depressing update… the Anaheim shows are sold out i cant find tix anywhere.

  32. Jordan

You guys should play Better Days if your dipping into the older stuff. Flags of Dawn would be SICK live as well. And, I’m just throwing this out there, but a live dvd would be killer and I’d be all over it. Yeah.

  33. Kevin

Hey, does anyone by chance have: Please Come Home For Christmas by Dustin? If looked and looked and looked but cant find it anywhere. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thrice Rule \m/

  34. A. P.

that rocks! i am going to be at both chicago shows and it would be awesome if you could do under a killing moon, that is my favorite song!

i was actually able to make it to the grand rapids show and it was amawing, i was right in the front and you guys were awesome, keep up the great work!

    God bless,

    A.P.

  35. Jess

have a happy easter weekend Thrice =D

  36. Jess

they should do something like ‘if we could only see us now’
but with.. making of the album(s) and live footage and stuffs. :]:]:]

  37. dave

I can’t believe people still ask to hear songs like T&C and Identity Crisis. Those songs are good for what they are, and they’ve had their day, but if any Thrice fan would rather see one of those two songs than anything most recent they are out of their mind!

  38. kate

making of the album for Alchemy Index: Vol 1,2,3,4 would be sooo sweet. those youtube videos weren’t enough

  39. Denise

    LAST.

    Cause I’m awesome like that?

Hope you guys have fun on your upcoming tour(s). :D

I bet you’re gonna get a lot of random people from the crowd who scream, “PLAY DEADBOLT.” There was one guy in Toronto who wouldn’t stop screaming that. xD I was all, “QUIET, DUSTIN’S SINGING.” >[

  40. Craig

Ultra Blue, Unquestioned Answers, Eclipse, and Phoenix Ignition. If you could play a few of those at either of the two san diego shows or the hollywood show I would be forever grateful.

  41. HAY

hey, it’d be sweet if you made 2 more elements.
    like gas or something.
    no, just messin round.

    but I love you thrice.
    really.
i would jump in front of cars if you asked me too
and dance around the fastest bullets.

so uh, remember how much Jesus loves you.
    because you are blessed.
    for real tho.
if I could make music like you guys,
then I’d probably hug myself constantly
for a period of my entire life.

    but anywhomaway, keep truckin.

  42. Ambar

    Thanks.

  43. Eric Hood

    Oh man, Paper Tigers …
    I can dream.

  44. Joe

i think its about time you boys had your own show with no guests. (nothing against the bands you tour with, they’re great, but we want more of thrice)

  45. carlos

damn kentucky and georgia blew up my bracket

  46. Jorge

^Agreed and Seconded, 2-3 hours of LIVE Thrice would be GODLY!

  47. Jess

    like nothing else..=D
i think this site is just so awesome. ever since its started, people who are equally obsessed and who love thrice get to read blogs they write and talk to other thrice lovers. its wonderful :D
    2-3 hours of THRICE..
    would beee amaazzinnngggggg!

  48. Jess

I also think that Thrice have the most supportive & awesome fans hahha.
    and its no wonder either.

  49. Zaq

Songs that I pray you guys play in Milwaukee:
    Come All You Weary
    Music Box
    Beltsville Crucible
    See You in the Shallows
    Motion Without Meaning
    Alantic
Don’t Tell and We Won’t Ask
    Digital Sea
So Strange I Remember You (the live version)
    Of Dust And Nations

While I love Deadbolt and Silhoette, you guys play them every time I see you, so I’m not worried about those.

  50. Katie

the earth will shake is one of the most moving songs live…
so.. uh, move me, thrice. ;-)

  51. Stephen

    Super Excited about the tour

to be completely honest it doesn’t matter at all what you play
im going to yell every lyric and mosh like never before

but i’ve always wanted to hear
    “that hideous strength”
    “stand and feel your worth”
    “weight of Glory”

but mostley i just want to hear the Alchemy Index Song for Song.
awesome album, you guys get better w/ everything you do. and when you think you can’t do anything better. you do. love you guys

  52. holly

  55. Moony

HOLLY! i can help you i have a ticket for a show at Hollywood that i have if all else fails you can just ask me and i will gladly help. =)

  56. Ty

i second the motion of a dvd. It would also make my life to hear awake and avenge the dead.

  57. Preston

just play the alchemy index all the way though live and ill be happy.

  58. Craig

So, am I the only one that thinks Eclipse would be awesome to play?

  59. Walter

Dude, if you guys want tix for may 27th sum dudes selling two for 90 bucks on ebay. And i think sumones selling a four pack too but i don’t know…go to ebay and type int thrice, you’ll find vinyls and stuff too…er…darn now you guys know…poo…just playin’. Have fun yall

  60. Jp

I saw them 4-5 times before, but according to me, the best setlist I’d like to listen to in a Thrice show would go as follow:

    -As the ruin falls
    -Where idols once stood
    -The beltsville crucible
    -The flags of dawn
    -that hideous strenght
    -Of dust and nations
    -Eclipse
-a living dance upon dead mind
    -betrayal is a symptom
    -atlantic
-between the end and where we lie
    -the messenger
-to awake and avenge the dead
    -the whaler
    -paper tiger
    -the abolition of man
-Don’t tell and we won’t ask
    -broken lungs
    -for miles
    -a subtle dagger
    -see you in the shallow
    -digital sea
    -under a killing moon

They would probably be dead after playing
this set list but I’m pretty sure everyone would sing along :D
I guess there are too many heavy song on this set list but man…
    They do it so well!!
take a few of my suggestions the next time
you come to Montreal please :)
    it would make my life!

  61. Jesse

TIX FOR HOLLYWOOD SHOW @ THE AVALON ON MAY 30TH ARE STILL AVAILABLE.

  62. kate

i hope all of you guys get to go to one of their shows.

  63. Chris

Ok, I know it’s way too premature to go off topic yet but…

Where has RAISING ARIZONA been all of my life!

  64. Trask

    Dear Thrice,

If you play For Miles at the Hartford show, which is in a small venue (that is also a cool venue), the vibe will be so awesome that I will be able to die happy when my time comes.
If you don’t play For Miles, my inconsolable ghost will wander the earth for all eternity, fretting over the lost opportunity of seeing For Miles live at the Webster Theater. Do you really want that on your collective conscience?
    Nah, just kidding.
    But play it anyway.

    Please.

    Your friend,
    Trask

P.S. Kill Me Quickly, Silhouette, Abolition of Man, Hold Fast Hope, and Stand and Feel Your Worth would also be incredible. And Open Water. And maybe Night Diving?
P.P.S. Oh, and also So Strange I Remember You. The cool version with the organ. And Eclipse too.
    P.P.P.S. I love you guys

  65. Benji

Ahhhhhhhh! SO excited!!!!! I hope they come back to New Zealand!!!! (dustin promised me so im holding it to him!)

  66. Jeff

    LEGIT!!!

  67. Trems

i would love to catch identity crisis live again. I havent seen that song live since you guys played with Hot water music and Coheed back on the IOS tour. It would be great to hear that tune again.

also maybe like…trust,In the Years to Come, The Abolition of Man. Those are all some of my oldie favorites.

really anything you guys play though ill be stoked about.

Just got my tickets today for the Worcester show in MA. I cant friggen wait. See you in a few weeks!

  68. Moony

I think it would be so amazingly cool if some of us got to actually meet up at the shows… we should have like a designated alchemy index commenter region and should all hold signs with our names.

i love thrice and anyone who loves thrice.

  69. Melissa H.

oh, man.. a whole pool of songs to chose from is so exciting.. .does this mean you could possibly take requests at the shows? (that’s a hint.. ha.. a girl can try.. )or even b-sides? i know you played Flags of Dawn in Detroit last October (thank you by the way :) )

and for Kevin who was asking about Please Come Home.. i have it (it’s ridiculously amazing, by the way).. i purchased it on iTunes. i just checked Bestbuy.com for you.. it says it’s available in most stores.. or you could just order it and have it delivered to a store near you if you’d like.

  70. Preston

    LIKE MOTHS TO FLAME

    PLEASE

  71. Katie

yayyy i got my thrice tattoo today! i’m effing sore!

  72. thomas

i’d rub a live dvd all over my body

  73. Jp#2

The last time I saw you guys, you closed with For Miles and To awake and Avenge the Dead as your encore…

um, it’d be nice if those two were in there somewhere.

  74. Jorge

I’m under the impression that since Pelican is touring with them, Thrice will pull out their own instrumental piece and give everyone a first taste of Night Diving. Just a guess. I’m also under the impression that Thrice made the announcement of their going to play older songs in order to get us all rowdy in their comments and shoot off song suggestions and then pick out the most reasonable and popular songs from what was suggested (I could be totally wrong , but it would be awesome if we did have that much of an influence in what they would decide to play!)

So with that being said, could more people vouch for Hold Fast Hope based on the sorry fact that you can’t find that song live and complete anywhere on the internet. The Youtube video showed barely any of it and I haven’t found anything more anywhere else.

And @ Mooney: I totally wish I could meet up with true fellow Thrice fans at their shows. The last two shows they had in Orlando I had to wait all by myself for about 5 hours to see them, but it was totally worth it, although having a fellow fan or friend there would’ve been better. I too love anyone who loves Thrice, because no one I know loves Thrice as much as I do where I live, and it’s such a shame that I can’t share that love with anyone else, blastin’ awesome Thrice tunes in my awesome car stereo and singing along with some who would enjoy it as much as I would.

But alas, sorry for sort of going on and rambling there, I guess I’ll just end with PLEASE PLAY HOLD FAST HOPE IN ORLANDO!!!

  75. Jorge

^dang that was long, sorry guys XD

  76. Chris

    Dear Eric Hood,

    I, too enjoy Almond Joy.

    Love,
    Chris

  77. Jack

I’ve seen Thrice about 10 times now and they blow me away every time. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to see them on their next tour because I made the brilliant choice of moving to North Africa for the year and the 2 weeks I’m in the states they’re on the other side of the country.

For all the times I’ve seen them, they’ve never played “don’t tell and we won’t ask.” i would just want to see eclipse, motion isn’t meaning, weight of glory, flags of dawn, and pretty much anything from the alchemy index. As the Ruins Fall is amazing live and so is Betrayal is a Symptom. And without a doubt they need to bring back That Hideous Strength. They’ll never play T & C again, but I was one of the lucky few who saw it for the last time at the SSE charity walk show back in ‘04.

As for things I’m sick of always seeing: artist in the ambulance, deadbolt (my fav song but they’ve never not played it), silhouette, subtle dagger, stare at the sun. Well, this post is useless considering I won’t get to see them this year anyways but I wanted to at least put my two cents in.

Please play in england between August 28-September 2 so I can see you while I happen to be there.

  78. Logan

    Hey Jack,

Funny, they played Don’t Tell And We Won’t Ask at my very first Thrice Show. They also played Motion Isn’t Meaning, Flags of Dawn, and a couple other random ones like Hoods on Peregrine. AND, at my first Thrice show, they DIDN’T play Deadbolt, Silhouette, Stare at the Sun, Artist in the Ambulance, or Subtle Dagger. haha. I guess that would have been a good show for you to hit up… sorry you didn’t make it.

I do, however, agree that I want to see That Hideous Strength.

  79. holly

    Moony

HOLLY! i can help you i have a ticket for a show at Hollywood that i have if all else fails you can just ask me and i will gladly help. =)

    how my friend, how?

ps i heard moving mountains on youtube, pretty awesome! if i have not love I am a clinging cymbal..who wants to be that brash, annoying sound? yikes.

  80. israel

I find it hard to put into words an explanation of Thrice’s music. If I can’t get someone to listen to it, he/she never fully understands all the life changing possibilities that the music holds. Occasionally, I can somewhat convey the power by letting someone read the lyrics…which almost always guarantees that he/she will have a un-tamable desire to listen to the music while reading the lyrics. Where I live, It is hard to find people who understand Thrice; so, this website is a very good thing.
Thank you Thrice for who you guys are and what you share with all of us.

  81. Jason

I completely agree with Israel, a lot of my friends don’t like Thrice, I’ve converted a few though. Does Thrice play Lost Continent or The Flame Deluge live? That would be so sweet, my head would explode!

  82. Logan

I’m pretty sure they’ve never played The Flame Deluge live, or any of the sonnets for that matter. Not sure about Lost Continent though.

  83. Eddie

PLEASE ADD WEIGHT OF GLORY AND BLOOD CLOTS INTO THE ROTATION!!!! CAN’T WAIT TO SEE YOU IN ANAHEIM AND IN HOLLYWOOD!!! =)

  84. HAY

if I had to choose just one song I wanted to see live(which I don’t)I would choose Broken Lungs.

But if i didn’t have to choose one song, this is what it would look like:

    The Illusion Of Safety Album
The Artist In The Ambulance Album
    Vheissu Album
    All Twenty-Four Alchemy Index Songs.

p.s. “might want to have drinking water on stage, just incase.”

  85. Moony

i meant to say i have an EXTRA ticket to the Hollywood show… sorry for the confusion

  86. Ryan

I would be happy with whatever you play. But as long as you play The Whaler on the may 13th show in buffalo.

  87. Chris

Would anyone else agree with me that I don’t consider the sonnets to be actual “songs”? I know that they personify the respective elements but I don’t feel that they belong with the other songs on the EP, but they belong to the element.

Did any of that make sense?
I have been thinking about that ever since I first heard the Alchemy Index.

  88. Kyle

Chris… I think I know what you mean… so far they aren’t really songs I love listening to, but at the same time they are kind of a capstone to each record. Each one forces me to read the lyrics of them and, like all of thrice’s lyrics, are completely epic. I love that about the songs though… I feel like I’m paying attention to the message of the sonnets even when I’m listening to the other songs

On another note, thrice’s old site had an area where they had recommendations… music, books, games, etc… I’d really love to see that resurrected

  89. Parke

…and then she said, “do you love me?”…and he said, “no..but that’s a real nice ski mask!!” ahahahahahahahah!!!!!! but seriously, thrice…you guys make superior music. can’t wait to see you in nashville. my name’s parke. say my name say my name..

  90. Craig

    My setlist dream:
Eclipse, Phoenix Ignition, That Hideous Strength, Come All You Weary, The Whaler, Unquestioned Answers, The Messenger, Like Moths To Flame, To Awake and Avenge the Dead, Moving Mountains, Paper Tigers, The Red Death, Under a Killing Moon, Red Sky, Blood Clots and Black Holes, The Flags of Dawn, Stand and Feel your Worth, The Beltsville Crucible, Broken Lungs, As The Ruins Fall, Burn The Fleet, So Strange I Remember You (live version/remix) and most importantly (quite possibly my favorite Thrice song only to be competed with by the beautiful song The Whaler) “For Miles”!

  91. Trask

Yeah, I’d love to see the recommendation area back up. I got some good reading selections from that.

I think Thrice should just play For Miles at every show, since it’s a fantastic song that is much loved by us fans.

  92. Logan

For Miles was absolutely incredible at the last show I went to. Dustin nailed all the high singing parts (although I think they were in drop B rather than the album version’s drop C, making the singing marginally easier), and the ending was more epic than epic.

So, yeah. Play it again, always, every show.

  93. Jess

    i love everyones suggestions =]
and hearing people say that they love thrice and any thrice lovers. for i am the same
    love jess

  94. Jack

    Logan,

You are a lucky men to have got that line up at your first show. My first show they played “All that’s Left” of all things. I guess I’ve been blessed living in Orange County because 1) I live by them and see some of the guys around at either church, IKEA or random coffee shops 2) They play shows in LA a lot and 3) Seeing them a lot has allowed me to have only not seen a few songs live.

I just realized they need to start playing Cold Cash with the extended ending again. Now that would be epic.

  95. Jack

I mean *man* not “men.” Oh well I guess that’s what I get for wanting to be a writer.

  96. Logan

No worries dude. I live in Orange County as well (Laguna Niguel - Dana Point) and the show I spoke of was at SOMA in San Diego. Word!

    Happy Easter everyone. God bless.

  97. Katie

    along with the sonnets convo…

i think the flame deluge is extremely powerful and i actually really like listening to it. i might even go as far to say that its my favorite on Fire.

i havent heard the other two sonnets yet (obviously…), but i am willing to say that the flame deluge might be the most successful sonnet as far as capturing the essence of its element.

  98. Fernando

The Flame Deluge should be played as an introduction song at the concerts of the next tour. It would be great.

  99. Joe Harman

    Dear Thrice,

Please play A Torch To End All Torches, The Red Death, Dont Tell and We Wont Ask, Flags of Dawn, That Hideous Strength, and Eclipse.
I have seen you guys four times (frice?) and never seen any of these songs. I will die a happen man if you play them all. Thank you.

    Love,

    Joe

  100. Chris

This might be blasphemy, but I’m going to say it anyway.

I’m not a big fan of IOS.

Like they said in the DVD, post-IOS they have been trying to make more memorable songs as opposed to more memorable parts. This is definitly true.

    For example:
If you were to play me a song from IOS (with the exception of Deadbolt and To Awake and Avenge the Dead) I wouldn’t be able to tell you what song it was, but if you were to play me a particular solo or something, I would recognize it for sure, but since Artist, the songs have been more memorable.

  101. kate

    Chris-

Not being a big fan of IOS isn’t blasphemy, it’s just your personal taste :) But personally, even though IOS was more aimed towards memorable parts, i love the fact that there is a different thrice song to suit any mood i’m in. i like the fact i can put in one of their heavier records if i want to rock out, or put in the water album if i want to chill out.

as for dream setlists, i saw thrice in february and was saddened when i didn’t hear Atlantic. seriously one of my favorite songs from them. so if i ever saw them again, i would die to hear that one.

    one more thing…

although thrice doesn’t have a recommendation section on this site, i reckon that some of YOU have awesome recommendations you would like to share? I just finished reading “This is Your Brain on Music” by Daniel Levitin (for all us music geeks), and “Into the Wild” by Jon Krakauer and i highly recommend them.

  102. Kyle

By old songs I hope you mean Vheissu and not older, because come May 10th it would be swell to hear some new Air/Earth songs, as well as Fire/Water and songs from Vheissu. I don’t think IOS was a great album. Artist in the Ambulance was pretty good, but from Vheissu and on has been epic.

  103. holly

I will glady purchase that ticket………..? we can work somethin out? like i send you dinero and you send me the ticket? yaeahhaha!

    this is addressed to Moony

    ps happy Resurrection Day!!!!

  104. Katie

    play SEND ME AN ANGEL!!!!!

    hahahaha jk jk jk.

i think to be completely fair, a handful of songs from each album should be played. i couldnt believe when i saw them in february that they didnt play a single song off of Identity Crisis. i mean, sure its definitely not their BEST BEST BEST, but i still have a soft spot for phoenix ignition, ultra blue, to what end, etc etc etc.

  105. lucci

Thats a shame man. You should learn how to listen more actively.

  106. Moony

holly first off check ticket master cuz last time i checked they still had tix for the avalon shows.. if u cant find any we’ll work something out

  107. Jason?

I need to hear The Flame Deluge live so bad! That is such an intense song, every time I listen to it I get chills.

  108. johnson

i really would like strictly alchemy index songs.
dont get me wrong, ive seen thrice plenty of times.
its just i dont want to see the usual songs you guys are probably bored of playing.
i want to see all the new songs.

  109. Trask

This’ll be my first time seeing Thrice, so I’m good with whatever they play. (Unless they don’t play For Miles. Then I am not good.) (Well, I’m still good, just not AS good.)
Also, I’m with Kyle on the whole “Vheissu onward has been transcendent, whereas previous records have simply been wonderful/amazing” thing. Don’t kill me please. Thrice is still my favorite band ever.

As for recommendations, I suggest all of Markus Zusak’s oeuvre. I love those books.

  110. Jorge

Of course it’s your preference on as to whether you liked IC and IOS when compared to Artist and on, but what people should realize is that it was those exact albums that won the many Thrice fans over. Sometimes “memorable parts” can have as much feeling and depth as “memorable songs”, depending on the person. I do agree with Teppei when he said those albums were easy. I’ve since heard too many knock offs of those kinds of songs, but none come as close as Thrice in greatness in their post hardcore days. Their new stuff is epic, awesome, and what have you, but I for one wouldn’t HATE hearing the old stuff now and again because that’s what I first fell in love with. Just my 2 cents.

  111. Chris

    Oh yeah, totally Jorge.
Hearing the old songs, even though they weren’t my favorite records would be really cool because they are rarer songs and they have sort of a novelty to them. The classics.

As for personal preference, I can understand completely. In it’s most basic form, the genre of music delivered in post-IOS is just the like of music I like to listen to.

I was never really a big fan of the post-hardcore.

I don’t know what genre to give Thrice. Maybe post-post-hardcore, but unless you’re deaf, we all know that Thrice can (and pretty much has) be every genre and be perfect in it.

Maybe Thrice’s genre should be just…Thrice.

  112. Matt

i also agree with Vheissu on being transcendent… the new records are so… complete, so genious. *man crush* lol

    holly-
Happy Resurrection Day back at ya! :)

    chris-
i agree with what you said about the IOS too… it’s pretty good, but it’ nothing compared to Vheissu and The Alchemy Index.

  113. Logan

my favorite album is constantly shifting. at first it was TAITA (this was before Vheissu) but I sort of liked IOS as well. IC I never really even listened to at this point. then Vheissu came out and changed my life, and of course it was my favorite. then, right before I and II came out, suddenly my favorite album was IOS. just that raw energy and passion spoke to me in an awesome way. now it’s safe to say that my favorite albums are Vheissu and IOS, even more than I like AI: I and II, even though those are great too.

  114. Logan

    so, in summary:

even though I originally wasn’t just in love with IOS, lately its emotion, passion, and energy have really been hitting me hard and it’s shot up to one of my favorites. and I definitely understand when people say it’s Thrice’s best album (although I don’t necessarily agree), but I also understand when people tend to favor the post-IOS albums.

    but I freakin love it.

  115. Moony

it is evident that thrice has changed and shifted their musical abilities from the IC/IOS days. but, i don’t really know why i feel like it’s TAITA where the change happened and not vheissu on. Does that make sense? disagree? agree?

  116. Cody

It’d be cool to hear old stuff, but to be honest, if they came out, and played all of The Alchemy Index I-IV, from start to finish, that would be awesome. And maybe through in Stand And Feel Your Worth. Awesome.

  117. Luke

I completely agree with you Moony. Artist was the main turning point I think, which then developed into Vheissu. Artist still has the power that Identity and Illusion had, but Artist’s songs are somewhat deeper/complex in lyrics and the sound is different also.

  118. Donny

hopefully they play “So Strange I remember You” and maybe “To Awake and Avenge the Dead” anything off of The Illusion of Safety and The Artist in the Ambulance and I’m really excited to hear Air and Earth

  119. Jess

i have a pre order slip in my possession and boy does it feel good. 19 days to go! =]

  120. Hugo

Each of their albums seems significantly different from the last for such specific ideas as a “biggest change album” IMO.

IOS was such a colorful album, think quickly of the Red Death, or A Living Dance. In my view it is a huge departure as well.

Their departure’s have slowed down a bit, but that is just because after Vheissu, I got the feeling they could pretty much pull anything off, as The Index strongly helps to prove.

(all above opinion) AND GRR FOR AWESOME CONCERTS I’M NOT GOING TO SEE.

  121. Chris

I don’t think we give TAITA enough credit.

I think it was the furthest departure of all the other albums in terms of distance from the album preceding it.

*If that made any sense at all, sorry.*

I was somewhat of a late bloomer for Thrice. The first song I heard of theirs was Stare at the Sun on the video game SSX3 of all places (even though it was a cover and not actually Thrice) I bought TAITA and didn’t really like it at first. I must admit I had little to no musical taste at the time and TAITA is a pretty heavy album.

When Vheissu came out, I liked Image of the Invisible (because it was the single and I still had no musical taste at the time) Then I heard Atlantic and everything changed. All of my preconceived notions of Thrice went out the window and I have been in love ever since (and I have developed a pretty good musical taste to boot).

Vheissu “changed my life” and I think that no matter what album they put out henceforth, it will still be my favorite record of not only theirs, but in general for me. I really liked the Christian themes and the music is much more mature and more refined.

Not that I was getting tired of Vheissu, I didn’t want it to get old, so I worked my way back on the Thrice Discography. I really started to like TAITA a lot and I almost listened to it more then Vheissu.

But I digress. What I am trying to get at is that TAITA is a good album. A damn good album and I think it gets looked over a lot and I just think it needs some recognition. Not that I’m complaining, I am just observing things.

    Sorry for the long post…

  122. Trask

Yeah, I only got into Thrice when Vheissu came out (I was fourteen at the time. I’m a young ‘un.), so it’ll always be my favorite album, because of its sentimental value and the fact that it really did change my life, especially with “For Miles.” That one song effectively turned me into a good person. It was pretty remarkable.

That being said, I think TAITA and Vheissu are both turning points (which might not be possible… oh well). To me, it sounds like TAITA had the most potential for Thrice to make a completely different album afterward, just because TAITA was so different from IoS. Vheissu was that completely different album.

  123. Jorge

IMHO, TAITA was just a harder/metal album that Thrice came out with, and I loved it because of that. Paper Tigers and Blood Clots and Black Holes rock my world, along with almost all the other songs. That being said though, when Vheissu came out, I absolutely hated it. I hated that Thrice had digressed so much and went “soft” on me so to speak. But I wouldn’t give up on them and after opening up a little more to the album, I know absolutely love it. Those songs are so beautiful. TAITA is freakin’ awesome, but I don’t think it made as much of an impact as IOS and Vheissu because it was more of a “transitional” album. Whereas IOS won over the hardcore fans, Vheissu digressed to almost a point of no return from IOS that it was a lot more noticeable as an album than TAITA. But yeah, TAITA is awesome, along with every album Thrice has come out with.

  124. Jorge

Ah that’s “now absolutely love it” not “know” my bad on the typo

  125. Chris

What does IMO or IMHO stand for?

  126. Sean

    I.n M.y H.umble O.pinion

  127. kate

    Chris-

I totally agree with you on TAITA, that album was a really big departure from their previous albums, but although it was different, I ended up really liking it. And like you, I too was completely turned on to them through Atlantic. Mind you, I loved their previous albums, but for a different reason than I would for Vheissu. I was a huge hardcore/metal fan (still am) and I think I loved the IOS and IC cause they were more progressive. Atlantic changed the way I listened to them :)

  128. Logan

I also often overlook TAITA, favoring IOS or Vheissu over it. I rarely choose it when I’m deciding what album to listen to, but every time I do, I remember how great it is - songs like Melting Point, Silhouette, Abolition (and all the others on the album of course). I’m also partial to Paper Tigers as it was the first song that got me into Thrice (along with Awake & Avenge). so, yes, I agree it’s somewhat underrated.

discussion starter: what song got YOU into Thrice? I know we’ve sort of been talking about this already but it’d be cool to keep discussing.

  129. Ricky

What song got me into Thrice? Sillhouette. I was so glad to hear it live in november :)

  130. Jorge

Dang, that was a while ago, I think it was Ultra Blue and See You In The Shallows that won me over.

  131. Katie

there was no singular song that got me into thrice..
i was going to interview them during warped tour ‘03, so i went to watch them play before the interview.. got BLOWN away by their live show.
interviewed riley, who was absolutely nice considering i was a raving lunatic..
bought illusion of safety at warped..
then the rest is history. :-D

  132. Hugo

TAITA brought them to my top ten, Vheissu brought them to second to none (when you combine ALL of the band’s aspects, from charity to down-to-earth-ness to rocking and evolving).

First knew ‘em through the single All That’s Left on the teevee. Thought they were cool. REALLY liked the album, although Paper Tigers took a long time to get into.

Then I started getting Vheissu songs. Started with Atlantic, because of the watery name. I went HOLY CRAP and have been hooked since.

  133. Trask

I saw the Image of the Invisible video on TV, loved it, and ran off with my twenty-five-dollar iTunes gift card to buy Vheissu and TAITA (the total was actually about fifteen bucks at the time). The only physical CDs I have of those albums are burned, which is really annoying, but I’m holding off on buying the albums themselves until I can get the special edition of Vheissu.

  134. Adam R

I got into Thrice from a friend who showed me Atlantic. At first, alot of the songs didnt appeal to me since they were screaming alot. After a few years i grew into the music, i love a handful of songs from IOS and TAITA, but Vheissu is by far my favorite, and im infatuated with the AI cds.

to the guy above me, if your looking for the special edition of the CD’s just go to Amazon or eBay

  135. Mitch

The whole “pull the song out of the hat” thing sounds interesting. I can’t wait to see you all at the Masquerade in Atlanta again! It will be the second time I’ve seen Thrice in concert, and I know it will be just as cool, if not better. Last year I slid a copy of Stephen King’s “The Gunslinger” on stage. This year, I might give you guys another book, but I’m not sure which yet haha. Well, good luck practicing and can’t wait to see you guys!

  136. holly

thrice is the greatest band ever. duh. :)

who else is like them? no one!!!! oh sweet pearls of granpda land

  137. Ian

i heard all thats left from a friend, and then my brother started playing IOS and i fell in love with them, i got to shake there hands at warped tour 05′ and now even have a tattoo of the three bars on my left wrist. nobdoy is even close to what thrice has accomplished

  138. Jp#2

To awake and avenge the dead was the first song I ever heard from them. I believe it was featured on Atticus: Dragging the lake part 2? I don’t remember. The next day I went to Best Buy and bought Illusion of Safety and Identity Crisis both at once. I back-tracked going from IOS to IC and fell 100% in love. At first I wasn’t a huge fan of IC, but the more Thrice matured with IOS and TAITA, which I bought in the following months, I realized how freakin’ amazing all of IC was. Ever since the day I bought those cd’s, not a day has passed where I didn’t listen to Thrice.

  139. Mordecai

Stare at the Sun is what hooked me. Its remained one of my favorites over the years. I don’t think I have a favorite album, however. They’re all so different. I just think it depends on what I’m musically craving that day. Ya know?

  140. adam?

yes, play “the whaler” in buffalo may 13 or you will be beaten with a rubber hose.

and “hold fast hope” would be ass-ramming amazing.

  141. Luke

I know the first Thrice song I ever heard was Artist in the Ambulence and was around the time when that cd came out. I’m not sure where I heard it from, part of me wants to say it was a music video, but they never made one of that to my knowledge. So perhaps it was my radio station on Yahoo Radio, it was too long ago for me to remember. Since then I was hooked and worked my way down. I got Artist, then Illusion, then Identity and I love them for everything they are. I couldn’t pick a favorite Thrice song, maybe a top 3 per album, that’s trying it though. A lot of their music really inspires me to write stories and the such. That was awhile ago, back when I never knew anyone who even had heard of them (Live in Upstate NY). I got all of my friends into them though.

I wish I had their very first cd. Though sadly, they made only 1000 copies and passed them out from the back of a car and I believe (my personal belief and all, no facts to back it up) at least that less than 100 actually still are intact v.v….

  142. Chris

I am trying to learn the intro to For Miles on the piano (of course) — I have the tabs, but that means that I have to simultaneously learn it on the guitar.

    Lord help me.

  143. Moony

Chris can u send me those tabs my email is mownad@yahoo.com… the first song i ever heard from thrice was phoenix ignition back when i was 11. and the saddest part is i haven’t ever seen them live and I’m 18.. may is going to be my first thrice show. Mitch, do you think they’d mind if we slid them books on stage i have a couple that could be potential song inspirers.

  144. Luke

You won’t be let down Moony, especially since they have grown in stature since. I remember the first show I went to was back in ‘02 and Thursday was headlining, I liked them but I was going for Thrice. The line up was Coheed and Cambria, Thrice, Thursday. It was a small venue, which is best, and for some reason I’m not sure but I don’t think the equipment was hooked up right after Coheed, when Thrice was playing because I could barely hear Dustin and guitars kind of sounded ran together so at sometimes it was confusing as to what they were playing until I heard a certain lyric or certain riff. It was saddening, but it was an amazing experience even just to see and hear (kind of crappily) them play. If it is a small venue try to get as close as you can! Since then I have seen them two other times and it is still amazing ^_^

So yes, that long story was mainly just to remind you I’m sure that it will be amazing.

  145. Katie

um, guys… i did it… kind of accidentally.. but..
i listened to the earth isnt humming & moving mountains…

& oh MY GOSH i am so stoked for april 15 now!!!!!
    they are absolutely amazing. ahhhhhh.

  146. Luke

Haha.. My girlfriend sent me a link to The Earth Isn’t Humming and I listened to at most 1/4 of it before exiting the window. I couldn’t listen to it just yet XD I wanted to, but.. I just couldn’t bring myself to do it.

  147. Matthew

a lot of b-sides would be sick.

    motion isn’t meaning
    eclipse

    flags of dawn
    weight of glory

and possibly some stripped down versions off of IOS.

  148. randolf

Can you guys Please upload more Photos just so we can (see) whats going down in THRICE’s world!!!!

  149. Matt

Radio 1 strikes again guys and gals!

Deadalus was played last night. Listen to it here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/rockshow/

    Roughly 56 mins in.

  150. Matt

Oh man, this is just…wow. Fantastic. Pretty much exactly what I was hoping for.

I’ll be ripping it ASAP, if anyone’s interested in a copy ;)

  151. Alvaro

PLEASE COME TO MADRID THIS SUMMER!!!

  152. Matt

    Linky to rip: http://www.sendspace.com/file/b1vy0s

    Last post for now. Promise.

  153. Megan

I first got into Thrice when they toured with Face to Face FOREVER ago! The highlight of every time I see them is hearing Silhouette. As long as I hear this I will be a happyhappy girl. C’mon April 26th!

  154. Weihsin

    Matt-

    I’m so happy you post.
    ;)

  155. Katie

dang, everytime i hear a new song, i’m like, “now THAT will be my favorite song off the new album!”

the lyrics to daedalus are so wonderful, and so so fitting.

  156. Weihsin

    Katie-

Where did you find Deadalus’ lyrics?

    OMG I love this song.

  157. Trask

    Must. Not. Listen.

Chris, I transcribed the For Miles intro a while ago (it’s my favorite Thrice song, I couldn’t resist). I’ll put it down on Finale and post a link to it sometime soon.

  158. Katie

ehh i was just listening to it, catching the lyrics that way ;-)

  159. Adam R

Im in the process of writing the lyrics on Song Meanings.com, so check in alittle while

  160. Weihsin

    Oh ok..

    that’s what I’ll do ;)

  161. Weihsin

    Adam-

just tell when it’s done ;)

  162. Adam R

Here it is to the best of my knowledge:

I stand on the cliffs with my son next to me
This island our prison, our home
And everyday we look out at the sea
This place is all he’s ever known

“But I’ve got a plan,” He sung
Wax and some string, some feathers I stole from a bird
We leap from the cliff and we hear the wind sing a song thats too perfect for words

But son, please keep a steady wing
And know your the only one that means anything to me
Steer clear of the sun, or you’ll find yourself in the sea

Now safely away, I let out a cry
“We’ll make the mainland by noon”
But Icarus climbs higher still in the sky
    Maybe I’ve spoken too soon

But son, please keep a steady wing
And know your the only one that means anything to me
Steer clear of the sun, or you’ll find yourself in the sea
Wont you look at your wings
    They’re coming undone
    They’re splitting at the seams
Steer clear of the sun, for once wont you listen to me?

    Oh God!
Why is this happening to me?
All I wanted was new life for my son to grow up free
And now you took the only thing that meant anything to me
I’ll never fly again, I’ll hang up my wings
    Oh God!
Why is this happening to me?
All I wanted was new life for my son to grow up free
And now you took the only thing that meant anything to me
I’ll never fly again, I’ll hang up my wings
    Oh God!

Once again Thrice, bravo, for writing a truly beautiful and deep song. The lyrics, like The Whaler, almost bring a tear to my eye, and the emotion that Dustin sings makes the song so sincere and passionate. The music seems to go so perfectly with the song also, the rest of the band did a wonderful job on this song, and all the others im sure of. This is def going in my Top 10 fav Thrice songs. I truly am losing sleep over the wait for the album to come out, my life will be complete when it arrives in stores

  163. Adam R

O BTW, this is exactly why Thrice is my absolute favorite band, and certainly one of the best and, sadly, overlooked bands today

  164. HAY

Dustin should get some kind of award for writing like this

  165. Matt

Nice work man. That’s some pretty powerful wordage there. Good old Dustin.

  166. Weihsin

    OH Adam..thanks for the lyrics.
    Awesome and perfect!

I’ve got to agree with Matt too.

  167. Holly

thrice added a second show in hollywood? ticketmaster doesn’t have the date up yet, thus disabling me from buying tix…shucks.

dude, thrice is awesome. i love greek mythology. “classical” la la. hey, look it is sunny.

  168. Mdav

just got tickets for the San Diego show on April 16th! I don’t think I’ve ever been this excited before. Volumes 3 and 4 on the 15th, then Thrice live on the 16th. omg. i might just die from being overjoyed. thank you thrice.

  169. John

Hey I would like to say that I am so excited that you guys are playing your old stuff. That will hopefully include Paper Togers Which out of the 6 times I have seen you. yoiu have yet to play. Also I just recently found the b-side Lullaby and I am amzed at it. It is a perfect mix of Vheissu and Artist in the ambulance. IF anyone wants to hear it go to this site.

    http://waterispoison.com/audio.php

Just scroll down till you find Vheissu Extra-Lullaby

IT is amazing! I doubt you will play it at all. So here are some songs I would like to hear.
    Paper Tigers
    For Miles
To Awake and Avenge The Dead
    The Abolition of Man
    Hold Fast Hope
    The Earth Will Shake
    A Subtle Dagger
Deadbolt (I think you still need to play it at every show)
    Hoods on Peregrine

Those are just a few I would LOOVE to hear. And from the looks of it. Everyone else wants Flags of Dawn as well haha.

  170. John

Sorry for all the spelling mistakes.

  171. Moony

    omg i can’t believe what i’m hearing.

  172. eric

    ‘Daedalus’ is so good.
dustin and the boys turn water to wine yet again.

  173. Hugo

I wish I hadn’t heard the rip. It sounded so bad on my pc. The song promises to be very good, although not an immediate favorite.

  174. Weihsin

Need to add that Deadalus is “a song that’s too perfect for words” ;)

    oh words.

  175. Matt

    yesssssssssss!!!
totally got tickets to the new show in hollywood!

    stoked!!!!!!!!!!

  176. Jp#2

The ending to Daedalus is so powerful. It’s so…emotional.

That is truly one of the best endings ever.

  177. holly

hoorahhhhhhhhh! shooooot boys and girls daedalus is awesome. please.

  178. Pete

Bah I hate SendSpace it just keeps on refreshing and not letting me download the song!

  179. kate

i hope we don’t get to hear ALL of the album before it comes out. hahaha

  180. Trask

No! I must not read the lyrics! Reading lyrics is the second best part of getting a new Thrice album! (After actually listening to it, of course.)

Okay, here’s the For Miles intro for piano. It’s a jpeg file. Sorry, I fail at uploading things.
    http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a26/Snake_and_Gabriel/ForMilesintro.jpg

  181. Jorge

oh thank you so much Trask! I have a keyboard but I don’t know how to play piano. I can read the bass clef and my sister can read the treble so this is EXACTLY what I needed to learn this song as I suck at playing songs by ear.

  182. Sam

Dont know for you guys but daedalus looks like a king of second part of the melting point of wax !!

    What do you think ?

  183. Logan

Oh, shucks, possible lyrics have been posted. Since I’ve vowed not to get any more “pre-views” of the album before it comes out, I officially can’t read these comments anymore for fear of accidentally reading lyrics, or giving into temptation and downloading songs. It comes out three weeks from today. Until then I’ll have to stay strong and stay off these comment boards. It’s been fun guys, see you on April 15th. :)

  184. Adam R

    Agh, sorry guys!
Didnt mean to make the temptations worse for you guys :/

  185. Chris

    Ok, screw it.

Listening to one Air song wont hurt.

  186. johnson

you guys should check out www.myspace.com/eyealaska
    dustin’s younger brothers band.

    they are phenomenal

thrice and eye Alaska both probably hate people doing this.

  187. Chris

That was the most beautiful song I have heard since Atlantic.

  188. Joe Harman

you know what the most exciting thing for me is? thinking about what the hell thrice is gonna do next after this album. who the hell knows what direction theyll take. only time will tell.

  189. Neil Chowdhury

That was truly an amazing song… It fits the mood perfectly for how one must feel after losing his son. I think deadalus is “a song thats too perfect for words”. The guitar in the beginning was incredible. Props to tepps. Hes always been the most creative guitarist to me and always will be. Cant wait to see you guys in houston.

  190. Stefan

Daedalus…possibly one of the best songs of Thrice’s career

    mindblowingly good

  191. Jorge

^Agreed, first listen and I got goosebumps, Daedalus is so beautiful. Thrice never ceases to awe, amaze, and inspire. THIS is quality music. I can’t believe more people don’t appreciate their music.

  192. kate

Daedalus is ridiculously good…but OMG WHAT ARE WE DOING?? STOP LISTENING TO THE NEW MATERIAL!! MUST….WAIT…FOR…APRIL 15….

  193. Weihsin

ya..Listening to AI is not really good..but it’s so tempting!

How many songs have we heard from AI 3 & 4?

    OMG. They are so good.

  194. Weihsin

    Katie-

I was just wondering..what Thrice tatto did you get? and where? (if it’s not a problem to tell ^_^’ )

  195. Katie

    weibsin,

    heres a picture…

    http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a153/katiekabam/l_fd1f02d9e8a1380f3c17b1846a6d18e9.jpg

hold fast hope on my chest :-)

  196. Joe Harman

im gettin the cover from alchemy index on my shoulder with some color added in like they had on the myspace page when 1 and 2 first came out.

  197. Weihsin

    Thanks Katie,

    it looks pretty good ;)

  198. Mordecai

    Matt, thank you!!!

  199. Hugo

    Intense tattoo.
Joe H, what if Thrice’s next album has the best logo ever? hehe.
I’d need to relate to it visually to get one. The closest I’d get to that would be the Vheissu squid I guess heh.

I actually bothered to make a copy past to have the Index symbol with the four colors, and use it on a forum.

  200. Matt

i thought about getting the symbol for the Alchemy Index as a tatoo… i still might. i think it would be pretty cool

  201. Katie

    i love the vheissu squid!

i’m also thinking of getting a ship getting destroyed by waves, red sky and then “tonight we’ll make our bed at the bottom of the sea” in a banner.

i’m a navy brat so i’m all over nautical imagery. no wonder i like thrice, huh! ;-)

  202. Mike

Please come back to Cincinnati! :(

    I can’t miss this.

  203. Maria

Okay apparently everyone has already been discussing the new album The Alchemy index: fire and water, for quite some time, well I’d just like to put in my two cents….
Thrice’s older music was pretty raw compared to this new stuff. It seems like they have musically evolved over the yrs. I don’t think anyone else even comes close to the drastic this drastic turn around. Their early music compared to now, seems almost like a different band completely.
I just want to say I loved the new experimentation of Vheissu that they have continued on with into the Alchemy Index, keep up the good work guys!!
When I started listening to Thrice it was the older songs that drew me in, even though it seemed to me back then to be more screaming than music….No, but seriously the balance now is a completely different story, the melody, and the instumental, its come a long way!!
I still love the old stuff though too!!
    Keep surprising us!
Can’t wait until the final two volumes of the Alchemy index come out!

  204. Weihsin

yeah the Alchemy Index symbol looks good

  205. Eric

i tried taking in the alchemy logo to a shop to get an estimate from various artists.
Most of them seemed unsure of doing it due to its heavy us of circles, as circles are very hard to reproduce on the unstable surface of skin. The few that did say they would do it, would charge by the hour, thus estimating around 250-300 dollar tattoo.

for that fair simple design, that’s way too much money. I have friends whose tattoos are way more complex and detailed and barely scratched the 300 dollar surface.

So, now I’m looking at getting 4 triangles related to the alchemy sonnets.
If you look alchemy vol. 1 & 2 book, the two sonnets have their lyrics within a triangle, with the lyrics in each of the 3 walls of the triangle. I’m thinking of getting that basic design, but instead of the lyrics, I’ll get the name of the sonnet in that space. Example: “The”, “Flame”, and “Deluge”.
“Kings”, “Upon The”, “Main”. “Child”, “of”, “Dust”. The only one that wouldn’t work out is Silver Wings because it only has 2 words in the title. Eh, oh well. I think it would be a cool concept…. not to mention the fact that they are dustin’s design.

  206. luke

i got a thrice tattoo a few months back.

‘if we could only see us now’ around my right wrist.

i was thinking bout getting hold fast hope over my chest too.

  207. Mdav

oh sick! ticketmaster gave me a free itunes download after i got my thrice tickets. acoustic whaler, here I come.

  208. Alexx

The lyrics for Daedalus are awesome.
I love it how Daedalus and The Melting point of Wax tell the same story from different perspectives.
The Melting point of Wax is from the viewpoint of Icarus, while Daedalus is obviously from Daedalus’s view.

  209. Mordecai

hey, I don’t know if you’ve all discovered this, but it was new to me. There is a remix that combines Kill Me Quickly with some song by Alkaline Trio. I thought it was pretty cool. The link to download it is:

    http://06-07.sound2.org/?q=audio/download/63/file.mp3

enjoy! If Daedalus still hasn’t been able to help with the wait, maybe some retro Thrice remix will!

  210. Matt

    Mordecai-
    thanks for that.

it’s really interesting. i like it.

  211. Tyler

hey u guys.. this is kinda cool, i went to the airforce museum and they had this there
    http://webmail.aol.com/35304/aim/en-us/Mail/get-attachment.aspx?uid=1.17829165&folder=Inbox&partId=2

  212. Tyler

this is supposed to b icarus
    http://webmail.aol.com/35304/aim/en-us/Mail/get-attachment.aspx?uid=1.17829170&folder=Inbox&partId=2

  213. Trask

Hey, someone other than me knows about the Legion of Doom!

Yeah, that mashup is a Legion of Doom creation. Alkaline Trio is one of my top five favorite bands (mmm, guilty pleasures) and “Kill Me Quickly” is my favorite IoS song, so “Stupid Kill” (the name of that mashup) is my favorite from that Legion of Doom album. I love how they took the poppy “Stupid Kid,” added Thrice, and made it mildly terrifying.

  214. Evan

when is Thrice going to play on Later…with Jools Holland???

  215. kate

    herm?

  216. Moony

i’ve heard of the legion of doom. i never liked it hto

  217. Vince

    My thoughts on the lyrics:

“But I’ve got a plan, we sew
    wax and some string
to feathers I stole from the birds.

We leap from the cliff and we
    hear the wind sing
a song thats too perfect for words.”

  218. John

Check out the link I posted earlier about the song Lullaby it is Amazing and a b-side from vheissu

  219. Adam R

I realized i screwed up that paragraph alittle when i posted it, but that definitely makes more sense lol

  220. John A

wow…Daedalus is amazing :) Waiting for the second half of the Alchemy Index is getting that much more difficult

  221. Matt

“But son, please keep a steady wing
And know your the only one that means anything to me
Steer clear of the sun, or you’ll find yourself in the sea
Wont you look at your wings
    They’re coming undone
    They’re splitting at the seams
Steer clear of the sun, for once wont you listen to me?”

Anybody else feel that that’s not just to be taken at face value? I think it’s not just Daedalus talking to Icarus… it’s almost like God talking to us.
    I like it.

  222. Sam

i love the way you figure it, just amazing the way Dustin write, i cant beleve he dosent get any credit for it !

  223. Katie

sure dustin gets credit… we all love him!

  224. Matt

How could you not love Dustin?
The guy writes the most amazing lyrics… he has a way of twisting words and ideas that’s just.. beautiful. it’s art.
    *man crush* lol

  225. Moony

what is your favorite part in the daedalus? lyrically speaking…
mine is “we hear the wind sing a song that’s too perfect for words”

  226. John

Mine is when he says Oh God

  227. Jorge

The ending is freakin’ awesome. He’s not screaming, but you can hear the desperation and agony in his voice. It’s so well done, I’m still getting goosebumps. I’m definitely feeling that part the most and it’s one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard.

  228. Adam R

I like how he says to Icarus your the only one that means anything to me, and the desperation in Dustins voice at the end as Icarus’s wings melt

  229. Jason

    But I’ve got a plan
With some wax and some string
Some feathers I stole from the birds
He may leap from the cliffs
    And hear the wind sing
A song thats too perfect for words

  230. Matt

With all this Daedalus talk, I decided to listen to The Melting Point Of Wax, and it’s still amazing.
You guys heard the live, acoustic-ish version of it? It’s awesome. It’s from a Thrice-Thursday comp. CD.

you can get it on iTunes… and probably Limewire

  231. moony

yea same here i actually rediscovered TAITA because of this… its seriously amazing

  232. Adam R

Its truely an amazing song, its def my fav from TAITA

  233. Adam R

Its truely an amazing song, its def my fav from TAITA

  234. carlos

u know what would be sweet…if thrice was like due to the writer’s strike the cd’s gonna be released this tuesday rather than april 15th

  235. Ben

I think it’s actually my least favorite song from TAITA, but good nonetheless. I had a professor who played it in class and put the lyrics on an overhead to have us analyze as an introduction to Greek concepts of eros/logos, etc.

  236. Katie

is thrice playing a secret show in cali tomorrow (friday)?
i read some dang comment on their myspace.. anyone know if there is truth in this?

  237. Matt

    Katie-
it was a sweepstakes that the OC Register was doing. 12 people got picked to go and see them do a private acoustic set tomorrow.
    I’m bummed I didn’t get it… :(

  238. holly

curse the oc! haha. Even my cat likes thrice. it is so weird.

    he also eats pizza.

  239. Weihsin

This is my def favorite part:

    Maybe I’ve spoken too soon
But son, please keep a steady wing
And know your the only one that means anything to me
STEER CLEAR OF THE SUN, OR YOU’LL FIND YOURSELF IN THE SEA.
Wont you look at your wings
    They’re coming undone
    They’re splitting at the seams
Steer clear of the sun, FOR ONCE WON’T YOU LISTEN TO ME?

    OH GOD!
WHY IS THIS HAPPENING TO ME?
ALL I WANTED WAS A NEW LIFE FOR MY SON TO GROW UP FREE
AND NOW YOU TOOK THE ONLY THING THAT MEANT ANYTHING TO ME
I’ll never fly again, I’ll hang up my wings
    Oh God!

And I like the fact that Deadalus is the Father’s point of view as
Melting Point of Wax is the Child’s :D

  240. Jorge

Is it just me or does anyone else hear Dustin singing Oh God’S'?

  241. Matt

    Jorge-

i thought that same thing. I couldn’t tell if it was “Oh gods” or if it was “Oh God” with some sort of cymbal thing behind it.
“Oh gods” would make sense with the whole Greek mythology thing, though.

  242. Weihsin

    yeah “Oh Gods” make sense.

  243. Matt

    Oh, HELL YEAH

    Broken Lungs is on the band’s myspace! This is a good day :’}

  244. Sebas

Can anyone pls post “Broken Lung” lyrics?

I love Thrice, I love the people that love Thrice, I love this website because it keeps me in touch with the people that love Thrice, seriously I think I wanna marry this band.

  245. Joe Harman

hearing new thrice songs is better than getting presents..oh happy day

  246. Stefan

two brand new Thrice songs in the same week…what could be better

well, im sure April 15th will be better

    this band completes me

  247. Jorge

I agree with Stefan and Sebas, and I’m glad I’m not the only one hearing Gods lol

  248. Adam R

I dunno, I love the live version they have on Youtube, and dont get me wrong, this sounds amazing as well, but i cant figure out weather i like the more sped up tempo on the live version, or the slowed down one on the album. Amazing song nonetheless :D

  249. Matt

    Broken Lungs is effing amazing.

I’m sorry, I broke my pledge…. but who cares? it’s sooooooooo good!!!

  250. kate

“Gods” would make sense since the Greeks believed in more than one god.

  251. Matt

    @ Adam R

Personally I prefer the studio version. Much more.
I don’t know about the rest of you, but the clip they had of it in one of the air videos received far more attention from me than the live version, which is why I’ve been looking forward to the full version so damn much! Well worth the wait though.

  252. Gabriel

This has been an airy week

  253. Vince

    Broken Lungs is beautiful.

I believe it’s “Oh God,” because even though the added “s” would follow Greek Mythology, these are Dustin’s lyrics and his belief in one God, I think, has found its way into them. Though some would assume that’s pretentious, I don’t think it is at all. It’s a more personal take on the story, and he could say it’s crying to God, or just ONE of the gods. It all depends on the interperetation, really, which is what Thrice is all about.

  254. Weihsin

I’ve seen Broken Lung live about a month ago and I got to say that it is truly an amazing song! :D

  255. Matt

    Vince-
I’d have to agree with you… it makes sense for it to just be “Oh God” since it was Dustin who wrote it. Not only that, the song is more…accessible (for lack of a better term) when he screams “Oh God”. I think the “s” that we are hearing behind it, like i said before, is the hi-hat.
at least thats what it sounds like to a drummer. :)

  256. adam?

uhh, where are you people hearing this “daedalus”? i must have missed a post about this.

  257. Jorge

Vince, it’s like, I WANT to hear God, especially since it was written by Dustin and to cry out to more than one wouldn’t be appropriate coming from a Christian, but I really do hear an S pronounced at the end, and like many say, it would be GodS because it’s Daedalus and he probably believed in more than one god. But seriously, that’s the ONLY part that bothers me about the song, that even the mention of the word GODS can somewhat put me off. But the rest of the song is beautiful enough even with that.

  258. Mdav

Broken Lungs is indescribably good….more than amazing…..salvation for my ears. thrice rules!!

  259. Adam R

Ill take a stab at the lyrics again:

Woke up to a brand new skyline
We licked ours wounds and mourned the dead
    Swallowed the story, a con-…(?)
Is that what we meant, when we said that we would never forget

(something something (What are we?)) fools and cowards…(?)
To let them cover up their lies
Cause we all watch the buildings fall
We watched the (scales?) fall from our eyes

A fire burns beniethe my (hands?)
But still we breathe from broken lungs
We act like none of this matters
Was that meant, when we said that we’d sing what must be sung

(something something (What are we?)) fools and cowards…(?)
To let them cover up their lies
Cause we all watch the buildings fall
We watched the (scales?) fall from our eyes

    Wake!
    *cant tell the rest*

    What do u guys think?

  260. kate

“swallowed the story, hook and sinker”?
“are we fools and cowards all”?

  261. holly

where areyou people hearing broken lungs???

    c’mon…

  262. holly

    nvm! I am an idiot.

    this is AMAZING!

  263. holly

I THINK IT SAYS FIRE BENEATH MANHATTAN

    DUDES 9/11?

  264. holly

anyone here read the 9/11 commission report?

    it is pretty sad.

  265. Vince

    its not a 9/11 thing
    thrice has never gone political,
    and wouldn’t use names

  266. Joe Harman

you guys ever seen this kid cover to awake and avenge the dead?
    its pretty awesome.

    http://youtube.com/watch?v=RCYy4Uj-UHc

  267. HAY

so adam r, can you legally upload Broken Lungs to sendspace?

  268. Parke

i had my wisdom teeth pulled this morning and i thought of you guys.

  269. guy

    I’ve got it covered fellas.

  270. Katie

    sure, Matt.. Dustin wrote it.
but he doesn’t have a son named Icarus, now does he? :-P

i hear gods when i listen to it.
i guess we’ll find out for sure on april 15!

  271. Katie

i’m kind of with holly on this one.
it really sounds like manhattan.. and it fits the rest of the lyrics too.
its not really a POLITICAL thing… it’s just a LIFE thing. it happened, it was tragic for all of us.

  272. Katie

ha i revoke that comment. it IS political. and it is territory they’ve dabbled in before, anyway. Paper Tigers, anyone?

  273. HAY

Broken Lungs resembles Pink Floyd a little bit too.

  274. Mike

I’m glad you said that, HAY. I’ve been calling Thrice the Pink Floyd of today since Vheissu. I really hear it, not necessarily in the music but in the ideas behind it. The lyrics and music compliment each other perfectly, and there’s definitely a “less is more” approach. What I mean by that is just doing what is needed to make the song/album as perfect as possible… thinking as a group rather than as a soloist- which is the problem with a lot of bands.

  275. Adam R

Use http://file2hd.com/?myspacemp3 and then copy and paste the whole link (http://www.myspace.com/thrice) into the URL space and then click on the Audio bubble and check off “Agree to terms and conditions” then hit “get files”. Download and enjoy :D
Of course, im only using this for my iPod until the actual CD comes out. Of course i will promptly purchase the CD when it comes out, to support Thrice, as should u all if your going to download the songs ;)

  276. HAY

    exactly

  277. Matt

    Katie-
    Huh?

2 1/2 weeks boys and girls! i’m stoked!

  278. Vince

I don’t agree on Paper Tigers…they never used names, just general ideas. But I take back what I said…it is, in fact, “Manhattan.” Here are my lyrics for the song:

“Woke up to a brand new skyline.
We licked our wounds and mourned the dead.
Swallowed stories of con(?) [I’ve listened to this line over and over…nada]
Is that what we meant when we said
    that we never would forget?

Well are we fools and cowards all,
to let them cover up their lies?
    ‘Cause we all watched the buildings fall;
we watched the scales fall from our eyes.

    A fire burns beneath Manhattan,
but still we breathe with broken lungs.
We act like none of this matters,
is that what we meant when we said
that we’d sing what must be sung?

Well are we fools and cowards all,
to let them cover up their lies?
    ‘Cause we all watched the buildings fall;
we watched the scales fall from our eyes.

    First screamed line.
    “Scream, scream from the roof”
    Third screamed line.
    “Where, where are the —-”

This is a different topic even for Thrice. It’s too specific, too detailed, really. Even if it had just been about buildings falling you could’ve alluded to Nagaski, Hiroshima, Blitzkrieg on London, etc. etc. including 9/11. But the Manhattan bit seals it. I like the song, and the emotion behind it…but I’m iffy on the intent.

  279. HAY

    I heard,
“Swallowed the story, hook and sinker.”

But then again, that doesn’t even make sense to me.

  280. Matt

    Vince-
“Swallowed story- hook and sinker” sounds like the 3rd line.

you know what it sounds like to me? it sounds like Thrice is upset at the lack of support for the troops/government recently. It sounds like they’re frustrated with the American people for turning so quickly, forgetting what happened, and not singing the song that we said we’d sing

    maybe that’s just me

  281. Vince

No, it does. It makes perfect sense.
At first I thought this was about the “conspiracy” theories,
    but then I realized:

it’s about America’s belief that nothing could penetrate it,
and how it’s pride eventually lead to that horrible day.
The scales fell from our eyes and we were exposed
to the truth of a nation’s condition—that it is just as fragile
as the human beings who make it up.

  282. Matt

thats exactly what i was thinking too… scared me for a second. i thought they were getting into the whole conspiracy thing.

anyway, the fools and cowards thing makes sense too… to speak quickly and boldy and then do a complete 180 is foolish and cowardly on the part of the American people.

i like it. i think it makes a bold statement

  283. HAY

we all were ready to wage war,
but now it seems we don’t care for the life of our nation.
and i’d like to know why that is.
why have we turned our backs,
on the soldiers fighting for our freedom?

    our freedom is great.
but our hearts have gone numb,
to everything we truly have in front of us.

    Where are you America?
What has happened to Your heart?

  284. Vince

Air is going to be interesting…there are so many directions. Broken Lungs with its modern speak. Daedalus with the ancient. Milly Michelson with the random as hell, haha.

Btw, anyone notice the tracklist on Amazon.com? The last song of Earth is titled “Child of Dustin.” Error, or…huh?

  285. Matt

    hahahahahaha
    Child of Dustin.

maybe somebody should check their facts/sources before they post things. stupid Amazon

  286. HAY

does Dustin even have a child?

  287. Matt

    yeah, he’s got a daughter
i believe her name is Sailor.

  288. Vince

    mmmhmmm
    cute name btw
    i really like it

  289. HAY

i wish my name was sailor.

  290. HAY

    then again,
im a white boy from illinoise

  291. holly

dudes, dustin is big on the comission report… he recommended it in AP magazine. along with franny and zoey by salinger. haha.

    im readin the commission report.

  292. holly

ps. the commission report IS NOT a book full of conspiracy theories. in fact, it is (almost quoted) a study of what happened on 9/11 and the events that led up to it and how to prevent it from happening again. well, as much as we can prevent such things from happening. what we could do differently, stuff like that.

  293. Neil Chowdhury

Child of dustin huh? kinda makes you think doesnt it? .. maybe its a song for her? but i dont really see the sonnet being about her since its earth speaking to mankind

  294. Moony

HAY i dont mean to bring about a political debate but ur comment makes me really nervous can u elaborate on it?

  295. Kynan

I’m 99.8% sure that these lyrics are correct:

Woke up to a brand new skyline
We licked our wounds and mourned the dead
Swallowed the story, hook and sinker
Is that what we meant, when we said that we never would forget?

Are we fools and cowards all?
To let them cover up their lies
Because we all watch the buildings fall
And watched the scales fall from our eyes

    A fire burns beneath Manhattan
Still we breathe with broken lungs
We act like none of this matters
Is that what we meant, when we said that we’d sing what must be sung

Are we fools and cowards all?
To let them cover up their lies
Because we all watched the buildings fall
And watched the scales fall from our eyes

    We want justice
    Scream from the ruins
    We want justice
    We want the truth

  296. alvaro

their music seriously moves peoples hearts.

  297. Matt

    @ adam?

I posted a link to a rip of it further up this page.

    Here it is: http://www.sendspace.com/file/b1vy0s

  298. Jorge

Yeah, I agree with Vince on how this is new territory because it’s so specific and doesn’t allow much more area for interpretation, and I’m also iffy on the intent. But let’s not bring the war in Iraq into this either. I don’t think the song even touches that subject. It’s all about 9/11 and about how the American people are after that IN REGARDS to 9/11.

  299. HAY

well it seems at the beginning of this war(the one currently)
we all had our fists raised high and ready to defend America.
But now it seems we’ve lost the will to fight,
at least from where im sitting.

  300. Kyle Wahler

I’ll be seeing you twice on the upcoming tour in Orlando and Tampa. So I look forward to hearing an eclectic mix of songs.

  301. HAY

and I still wish I had a tangible version of “Broken Lungs”
that song is gonna be huge.

  302. johnson

i really want one of the other two earth songs soon…

digging my own grave and the other one…

  303. Matt

Christ, Broken Lungs is just…immense. Right up there with Flags of Dawn and Red Sky as my all time favourite Thrice songs.

I’ve been listening to it near enough all day around the house and outside. Stellar.

  304. Jason

So is it fair to assume at this point that there won’t be a pre-order that contains a t-shirt or any extras, just the album pre-order? And if that’s the case and given the cost of shipping, is there any advantage to pre-ordering through Vagrant/MerchLackey as opposed to Amazon or Interpunk?

  305. SeanLang

“to cry out to more than one wouldn’t be appropriate coming from a Christian”

Yeah…so it would be inappropriate to write a story in which there were more than one god? Haha, give me a break. I’m hearing just “God,” and it makes sense he would write it like that, but to do it because it would be inappropriate is ridiculous. It’s a story, and holding true to the story by not changing the characters’ religious aspects is fine, that doesn’t mean the person writing it or singing it is actually calling out to other gods. Cripes anyway. I don’t understand why one simple line is cause for so much debate.

  306. HAY

still wish I had broken lungs on my ipod or something.

  307. Matt

Oh, and for anyone who wants a downloadable version of the song: http://www.sendspace.com/file/68igat

  308. Matt

I literally posted that the second you did!

  309. HAY

    SWEET! I love you Matt.

  310. Holly

    matt you rule. thankyou bud

  311. Ricky

Matt, you are the man. I’d like to know how you do this, if you don’t mind sharing :)

  312. Matt

    :-)

    No worries guys.

Ricky, for Daedalus I used a free audio recorder. There’s quite a few about, so you need only do a quick Google search.

For Broken Lungs though, I instead actually downloaded the mp3 file from the Myspace page.

Tutorial? Firstly you need Firefox, and a plug-in called Firebug. Go to the Myspace page, and open Firebug. On the toolbar that says ‘Console, HTML’ etc click on HTML. Now type ‘mp3′ in the little search bar in the firebug window. You should land on a line of text that starts with ‘

    Hmm, dunno what happened there.

Nevermind, there’s actually a better guide to it here: http://www.devlounge.net/sidenotes/using-firebug-to-download-songs-from-myspace

I think you guys are dancing around the bushes when it comes to the lyrics of Broken Lungs. Really think about the song.

Who’s story are we falling for hook, line and sinker?
Who’s trying to cover up their lies and why would we be fools and cowards not to stop them?

Scales fall from our eyes is a term used when someone suddenly finds out the truth about something.

Also, how can ya’ll say Thrice has never been political. Paper Tigers, Hoods on Peregrine were very political.

  317. Eric

Also here’s an interview with Dustin where he recommends a book called
“The 9/11 Commission Report: Omissions and Distortions” by David Ray Griffin who is apart of the group called Scholars for 9/11 truth and justice. He’s what people would call a “conspiracy theorist.” But there’s nothing wrong with conspiracy theories if they’re conspiracy facts. Go to Infowars.com and get informed.

It’s supposed to be Child of Dust

  319. Jorge

    @SeanLang
Actually yeah, it would be inappropriate for a CHRISTIAN to write a story in which there were more than one god. No one said he was doing it to be inappropriate either, I totally understand that Dustin would just be writing that part to stay in the lines of the story itself, it was just my personal opinion and how I personally felt about the song. And I thought people had gotten over that part already, you’re the one beating a dead horse.

You know, each EP has a specific way to relate to mankind. Air could be the one dealing with more political things, questioning actions and such.

Bob Dylan’s “Blowing In The Wind” came to mind. What has happened and what is done is all blowing in the wind, we can all see it (if we choose to)… now what are we going to do about it?

Then again, I could be completely off-base, but maybe not.

  321. danny

I really hope dustin is not into the theories of controlled demolitions by our government or anything like that. That would make me very sad

  322. carlos

just gonna say that despite the fact i like the song alot… broken lungs isn’t very airy…not sure what i expected but its not…i like the song tho

  323. holly

i know…sit down with dustin and ask him all about broken lungs and its meaning! yyyeeaahh..

  324. Vince

    @Eric

Paper Tigers and Hoods on Peregrine are political, but NEVER is a place or name mentioned–merely ideas, philosophical ones, that never allude to events or societies or etc. Now The Flame Deluge alluded to Guernica and Dresden…Broken Lungs has now made mention of Manhattan/9-11. Big difference between BL and Paper Tigers.

As for the lyrics, I came across another interperetation…so it goes:

“Are we fools and cowards all
to let them cover up their lies?
    ‘Cause we watched the buildings fall;
we watched the scales fall from our eyes.”

I don’t think it’s as people assume from the beginning…that Dustin’s saying “we’re cowards if we believe their cover-ups and excuses and go about life”…it’s “are we cowards and fools for believing their excuses and going on with life?” It’s not an assertion, but an actual question–the debate within oneself, the internal conflict. Again…not really conspiracy, but more a question of if excuses should be accepted or if people should really look into what happened to prevent it from happening again.

As for the song being “Airy,” I thought it definitely was. The whistleish/hornish sound in the background was great, and the end made me think of epic winds that simulate the sound of a train. Def. Airy to me.

  325. Moony

    eric, you speak the truth.

  326. Jess

I love this site so much

  327. Matt

Aye, we’ve built up a pretty great little community here.

I was thinking about this the other day, and how useful it’d be if we had an actual forum in addition to comments. Get to it Thrice!

  328. travis

not airy? what about the harmony in the background during the chorus? i think that adds the soothing element of air myself… and its beautiful

  329. Mike

When they played Broken Lungs live I noticed something airy. It goes from heavy to soft, then back again quickly - kind of like the wind blowing.
