THINGS ‘N STUFF, ‘N STUFF ABOUT THOSE THINGS!
March 31st, 2008

Hello, people. It’s Riley. It’s been a while since Teps posted last and a lot has happened since then, so I thought I’d stop by and let you guys know what’s been going on. As most of you already know, we put the song “Broken Lungs” from the Air EP up on our Myspace last week, BBC Radio played the song “Daedalus” from the Air EP–a rip of it is floating around on the comments of this blog, BBC streams, message boards, etc. Check them out if you get a chance. Hopefully those’ll tide you over until the 15th when Vols. 3 & 4 come out.

Last Thursday, we went out to Sable Ranch in Santa Clarita to shoot a video for “Come All You Weary” with Zach Merck. The ranch is way out in the middle of nowhere, and I guess they’ve filmed some scenes for Deadwood, The Devil’s Rejects, and The A-Team (!!!) there. Zach and his crew got some amazing footage, and now we’re working together in post-production to put together a video unlike anything we’ve ever done before. I can’t give away any details, but can tell you that I know we’re all really excited about how things were looking on the monitors, and what this video could turn out to be. I’ll post a few photos that Teppei took at the bottom of this post.

Last Friday, we headed down the street to the Orange County Register to be a part of their new Soundcheck performances. Teppei and Dustin played 4 songs acoustic, Ed and I joined in for a Q&A with Ben Wener, and then we hung out with the 30 or so people who were selected by the Register to watch. The whole thing was videotaped and should be up on the Register’s site by later today or tomorrow at the latest. It was a really cool experience because it combined three things we do pretty regularly, but rarely all three at once (acoustic performance, meet-and-greet, video Q&A/interview).

That’s about it for now. We’ll check in a couple more times before we leave for tour. Hope you’re all well.

p.s.- baseball season starts today. i woke up feeling like a kid on christmas. so excited.

  13. Craig

What do you guys think, should I preorder the cd from the link off of their myspace or should I hold out a little longer for another awesome deal from merchdirect?

  14. Santa Clarita

Hi- I live in Santa Clarita. Would you define “the middle of nowhere” pahlease? :) I’d like to take a drive and check it out one of these days. I’m always searching for hidden treasures in the valley. Thanks.

  15. SeanLang

    1. Holy beards
    2. Small Brown Bike, YES!!! Good choice of tunage.

  16. Jeff

buy it both ways, they are an awesome band and well deserve everyone to have multiple copies of their work (you can give it to all the losers who don’t know them!) =D

    Righteous beards! Awesome!

Can’t wait until May and to see this epic video and III & IV!!!!

  17. PD

Please play Reading Festival this year.

    HAHAHAHA, the beards are awesome!

  20. Brian

Holy crap.. beards all over the place!

  21. Tricia

I’ll need to go listen to those :)

Wow, did everyone get into the beard spirit? Can’t see the Breckenridge bros close enough to tell.

Excited for the CAYW video. I love how each one is always so different from the last (though another atmospheric, ‘Red Sky’-esque performance vid would be pretty awesome)

    So-so-SO excited for volumes 3 & 4. You guys are the cat’s pajamas ^_^

  22. HAY

in the video your beards should be like crystal or fire or something,
just like mine in real life.

    and Meshuggah is really talented.

  23. HAY

    Tricia=lol at cat’s pajamas.

    haha get it.
    because cat’s don’t where pajama’s.

    im such a nerd.
but hey, they’re the ones who have the most fun.

  24. Eric Hood

You cant spell beard without bear.

  25. omair

    hahaha i love teppei’s beard !

  26. docta brown

if u go to youtube they have “the earth isn’t humming” and “moving mountains” from the air ep, they’re a post from a radio show or something they sound great.

  27. docta brown

my mistake for the previous comment the two songs are from the earth ep

  28. kate

katie! you don’t like meshuggah? I as well think they are talented.

  29. Hugo

Obzen and Consolers of the Lonely - both great albums. Raconteurs have taken it up a notch in my opinion.

Get that freakin video out there guys.

And like I said, how ’bout Broken Lungs on Conan, eh?
No rush to feel persuaded, heh.

  30. Hugo

Oh… and if you play either Come All You Weary or Broken Lungs… would it imply hiring (for the gig) a hand for keyboard? I mean… yeah.

  31. Jason

Teps beard is ROCKING! I just listened to Daedalus, & it is amazing.

  32. Ryan

    lol @ eric

    classic thrice board moment…

  33. Israel

So, what do your wives think about those beards?…..
What made you guys choose that location for the “Come All You Weary” video?

  34. holly

that buffalo is awesome. how do you spell “buffalo”? is that correct? hm.
two weeks guys and gals. I am so excited.

ps im a dodger fan. ha ha.

  35. HAY

    buffalo.
    the other brown meat.

  36. alex webb

    hey
So gracious that you guys played in Columbus, OH at the newport-for the first time ever I believe?
I waited about 3 hours in the snow after your set to try and get a couple words and thank you guys personally for coming and letting a shitty band like Say Anything play ahead of you guys.
-I didn’t catch the drum stick you threw but was given it, which was sweet.
Love the new stuff, looking forward to the newer, please don’t call it quits after the last two volumes.
And Bring on the hard stuff!
    Thanks for making life brighter,
    Much love-
    Alex

  37. Kyle

As the Crow Flies sounds amazing. Its extremely catchy. But Broken
Lungs is the most incredible song. 15 more days!

  38. HAY

where can I hear As The Crow Flies?

  39. Alexx

http://mp3.interpunk.com/156501-5.mp3 is As The Crows Fly, it’s not the full song.

  40. Jake

it’s supposed to be mustache march. not no-shave november…

  41. Kyle

I love how Riley encourages us to check out the rips of thrice songs. If this were a metallica thread we’d all be getting sued right now. Anyways, slightly off-topic, but the Tigers are going to own the halos… and every other team this year :P

yes I know they lost today… gotta have faith

  42. Moony

i know this is completely un-related to anything thrice but… some guy just rowed across the atlantic ocean in a freaking row boat. how sick is that!? anyways i can’t wait till april 15!!!

  43. Trask

Wow. Those are some killer beards.

If the “Come All You Weary” video includes buffalos (buffalo? buffaloes? buffali?), I will forever be able to trounce anyone who tries to demerit Thrice.
“Well, MY favorite band blah blah blah blah.”
“Well, Thrice had buffalo in their music video. Win.”

Oh man, fifteen more days until I can break my vows and listen to new Thrice. I can’t stop being excited for this.

  44. sam

    yes, beards…….

  45. Matt

    Trask-
i say we go with buffali.
and yes, that would be the ultimate pwnage. :)

  46. Jess

    haha buffali.
    i love these posts. XD
    yess 15 more daysss.
and beards are the best thing ever. hahaha they are awesome.
i also love everyone on these posts, cause we all love the same thing !
    THRICE for evers.
    love

  47. Jess

    also @ THOM
if you click the underlined ’soundcheck’ in rileys post the site comes up

  48. kate

    BUFFALI! lol

  49. murphy

Sweet. I like the antelope head… and the buffalufagus.

  50. sam

hey, i don’t have anything against thrice. hands down, they’re the best band i’ve ever heard. but does anyone know any other artists that are similar to thrice musically and lyrically? i would apreciate it.
and man, those beards are so rad.

    but seriously, april 15th…….cannot wait.

    thanks.

  51. Melissa H.

yay for updates! Broken Lungs and Daedalus are so wonderful, thank you!
april 15th is taking too long to get here.. and so is may 14th for that matter.. at least i have a full month to catch up on the new stuff before the show.. last time i had 2 days! i never really noticed how awkward a buffalo looked until just now..

  52. Evan

good to hear about the upcoming video, looking forward to it. Broken Lungs is awesome and just heard a snip of Daedalus, the bass and guitar tone sounds great along with everything else.

oh and the raconteurs album is all i have been listening to lately. its a great album. I needed a break from my Mars Volta craze. haha

    April 15th here we come!

  53. alvaro

    two f*** weeks…. only 15 days. waahahaha!!

  54. Weihsin

    Jeff-

haha you have really a good idea (”buy it both ways, they are an
awesome band and well deserve everyone to have multiple copies of
their work (you can give it to all the losers who don’t know them!)
    =D”) I LOVE it!!!

I’m so stoked for April 15th..it’s seriously gonna be one of the best
    days of my life! :D

I’m so fascinated by Teppei’s beard….I’m gonna think about
    it all day!

    NEWwww…Video…
    WOW.

  55. Weihsin

I clicked on the Soundcheck link but I couldn’t find the Soundcheck
    performance… can someone help?

  56. Trask

Sam: I haven’t gotten around to picking up their album yet, but I’ve heard that The Receiving End of Sirens are a good pick for Thrice fans. As Cities Burn is my second favorite band ever, and I think they’ve got some similarities to Thrice. Hopesfall is good too, plus (mind you, personal bias here, I love these bands) the most recent albums from Dead Poetic and Brand New.
And also 36 Crazyfists for pure awesome value.

    Okay, done now.

  57. Matt

    Trask-
“Vices” from Dead Poetic is a great album. it’s has a TAITA feel to it.

  58. Adam R

This may be a little late, but i saw on Absolute Punk someone posted what they thought was the ending to Broken Lungs:

    We want justice!
    Scream from the roofs!
    We want justice!
    We want the truth!

If its true than that definitely supports everyones idea that this was about 9/11 and the gov’t being so secretive towards the citizens

  59. Jason

I heard The Receiving end of Sirens broke up, sad cause I never got to see them live. I can’t wait until April 15th, its going to be a great day.

  60. Matt

Just pre ordered III & IV through Play.com

Man alive I can’t wait. I don’t think I’ve ever been so excited about an album’s release.

  61. Dustin

love how riley brings up the fact that there are clips floating around on message boards - shows that he knows about theboreds… which since its down for april fools go to www.theboreds.tk

  62. Hugo

It’s true, TREOS broke up, their myspace pretty much says it all.

Weird. I have to admit they felt odd without Casey, even though Mi Fa Mi has some great parts to it.
If their “hiatus” as they also call it means they’d rather do only good music than keep doing music that fluctuates all over, I’m happy for them.

And I’m going to check out the albums on Riley’s list I haven’t yet, and maybe some of those listed on these comments heh.

  63. holly

anyone who dislikes thrice is just plain dumb. i dont get it. how could you not like them or atleast appreciate them lyrically? UDDDDUUHH.

anyone here excited for the “expelled” movie coming out april 18th? i am pretty stoked.

  64. carlos

Trask u know what sucks about ur list is the fact that two of those bands broke up :( RIP TREOS and and hopesfall

  65. Ryan

Meshuggah is amazing… get with it kids..

Riley, thanks for coming to Buffalo…(well, in may)

  66. Sticky

Looking forward to seeing you at Northern Lights, Clifton Park, NY.. I am bringing some new comers, I’ve got them doing their homework. I’m all ready to complete the Master Piece with earth and air coming to me in the mail.. YES!! I’d Love to hear some Phenoix Ignition May 12th, Maybe that is in your Grab-Bag of Set list songs.(please) haha… Hey I have been listening to this CD that was handed to me Out in San Fran maybe two years ago now “Fallen Sleepless” Great sound! Whats their story. DO they ever leave Cali? The “Chance” venue in Poughkeepsie, NY, would be a sweet stop if on the east coast. I’ll be there in May LAter

  67. Trask

Matt - Yes it is! That’s one of my favorite albums.

TREOS broke up? Wow, I did not know that. Damn.
Oh well. I knew about the Hopesfall thing. The music industry needs to not suck anymore.

Yeah, I have yet to check out all the bands Thrice has recommended. I have a feeling my music catalog will double in size after I’ve done so.

  68. M.a.r.k

  71. Matt

    “We want answers
    We scream from the roofs
    We want justice
    We want the truth”

thats the end of Broken Wings.
sounds like a call for complete honesty.

  72. Matt

    sorry, this link is better

    love.

  74. Katie

    dag, yo.

i nearly teared up a few times. really moving.
    those songs are amazing acoustic.

  75. Trask

Well, the only one I could watch, due to my pledge, was Come All You Weary.

But man. Teppei’s got soul. They’ve both got soul. And beards. They’ve both got beards.

  76. Dwayne Charrington

    Nice beard Teppei, rock on.

Btw anyone reading this I’ve startec creating a Thrice Social Network for Thrice fans. The forums are only currently active, come and join. We’ve got quite a few members from WIP there, come say hello.

    http://www.thricescene.com

  77. Katie

trask, you are one strong individual.
with all this temptation flying around, i applaud you.

however, i’ll keep rockin’ the earth isnt humming, broken lungs, and daedalus. ;-)

  78. Parke

    beeaaarrddsss….soooo goooooooood…

  79. adam?

i love thrice more than i love taffy………. and i’m a man who enjoys his taffy.

  80. A. P.

i have a question! so i live in Chicago and want to go to the two nights you guys will be here! why can’t i but tickets? they seem to be no where!

  81. kristen

i half-pledged not to listen to anything else. i said that, and then i downloaded the daedalus rip that’s been floating around here. i said it again, then i went on the OC soundcheck site and watched those videos. needless to say, i am very, very happy with what i’m hearing. so i broke my pseudo-pledge. i’m okay with it, but i CANNOT WAIT for april 26. you guys are my lifeee. :D

  82. Denise

    Haha, nice beards. :D
I watched the first season of Deadwood because I liked Timothy Olyphant.

So, I got my dad into you guys.. and he’s about 68. Haha, no joke. So now you can say you have older fans too. He said he liked Dustin’s voice, because it’s so powerful.

    I agreed. ;]

Thanks for the newsflash. Looking forward to April 15th.

  83. Chris

Meshuggah… Riley has awesome taste in metal.

  84. johnson

ten years you took me for granted
still i aim and wonder through your lungs
you were sleep and soundly in your bed
drapes of silver wings and shutters fall
drew the posion from the summer stain
bring the fire out of your fevered skin
moved in you and stured your soul to sing
if you let me i will never leave
dance with sunless strands of lovers hair
formed the final words before your breath
pittied you and flied your sails with air
danced when your rose upon my breath
and after all of this i am amazed
for i am cursed for more then i am praised

no idea if they are right but its silver wing lyrics…

  85. sam

thanks trask, and anyone else who named some bands.

  86. Adam R

Silver Wings sounded pretty good acoustic, hopefully it wont be that short on the album lol

  87. Michael

The shooting location for the Come All You Weary video makes it sound as though we’ll be getting something awesome. Can’t wait to see it.

  88. Ricky Denim

Can’t watch coz im at work. Really cant wait to hear silver wings! Can anyone tell me if its the same as on the video we got ages ago? Coz i ripped the audio from that and its like a 1min song or so. Is the actually song longer? I was hoping that video was kind of an edit.

  89. Ricky Denim

I just listened to the rip on my ipod and the lyrics start off the same as what Johnson posted, but stop at ’shutters fall’ then start again at around “danced when your rose”. So i take it must be shorter what i have.

  90. sam

    silver wings acoustic is sick!

  91. gabriel planas (brazil)

    Simillar to the buffalo, LOL³

    Just love u guys.

  92. Vince

lyrics for “silver wings”–from my hearing, anyways

through tender years you took me for granted,
but still i tend to wander through your life.
you were sleeping soundly in your bed,
your drapes were silver wings, your shutters fly.

you drew the poison from the summer stain
you blew the fire out of your feverish hand.
i moved in you and stirred your soul to stand
and if you let me, i will never leave again.

you danced with sunless strands of lover’s hair,
and formed the final words before your death.
    i pitied you and filled your sails with air;
a blessing when you rose upon my breath

and after all of this i am amazed
that i am cursed far more than i am praised

  93. Katie

so somebody’s GOTTA rip the audio from these videos.
    hurry!

  94. Ricky Denim

I know i kinda answered myself, but how long is the silver wings they play? Like is it normal song length? THanks

  95. Jared

Riley…keep those recommendations coming. I listen to everything you suggest, and at least about 50 percent of it has become pretty regular listening for me.

  96. albert

how can i rip these vids i’ve been trying to learn broken lungs on my guitar, but i need it on my ipod too :(

  97. Matt

    adam?-
    hahahahahahahaha
you can call me mayor chapstick

  98. PAul

from tender years you took me for granted
but still i deign to wander through your lungs
and you were sleeping soundly in your bed
your drapes were silver wings your shutters flung

i drew the poison from the summer sting
i breathed the fire out of your fevered skin
i moved in you and stirred your soul to sing
and if you let me i wouldn’t move again

i’ve danced with sunlit strands of lovers hair
and formed the final words before your death
i pitied you and filled your sails with air
a blessing when you rose upon my breath

and after all of this i am amazed
that i am cursed far more than i am praised

  124. Albert

Ok…thanks Matt for the songs but but is there any way to rip the vids? I’m dying to know? btw cant wait to see Thrice at the masq on 4/26 my first show!!!!!!!

  125. Trask

I didn’t listen to Digital Sea or Firebreather before Fire and Water came out, and I was really glad I didn’t when I finally bought the CDs. So I’m holding out this time too, especially because so many songs have been released already.

  126. South

Can you post them not in Rar. form please?

  127. Jorge

I think I’m going to attempt not listening to any new releases until I buy the album for the next album. I wonder how much better it actually feels to experience the album as a whole, I can imagine it’d probably feel better, but I guess I’ll find that out next album lol

  128. white

I can’t believe the release date is almost here. Can’t wait.

daedalus is so amzazing. Love it. Almost sounds like it could be
part two of ‘the melting point of wax’ lyrics obviously, but also
musically, just more ‘airy’ and slowed down, but better.

  129. Scott

hey, if anyone wants to take the time to pray for a good friend of mine…her mom is terminally ill with cancer and things arent looking good for the near future. i dont want to depress anyone with a long story, and i dont believe in soap box sermons, but i believe that prayer is a powerful thing and can have amazing effects. so if you have a minute, just give it a thought. thanks.
on a lighter note…this cd will be incredible and i cant wait to hear some of it live. love what im hearing so far.

  130. the guy who fell in the water

Is there gonna be another Pre order Deal with Merch Direct?? Thrice please let us know!

  131. Jason

I contacted Vagrant/MerchLackey, and although I didn’t ask specifically whether there would be a different pre-order (with a shirt or some other bonuses), it sounded like they were handling the official pre-order as opposed to Merch Direct.

Now that it’s within two weeks, it’s probably fair to assume there won’t be a different pre-order. And if for some reason I’m wrong, I guess I’ll just buy two copies.

  132. Matt

    Holly,
That’s really weird. Sorry they don’t work :(

Vince posted some links further up the page though. Might be worth a try if you can’t get mine to play.

  133. the guy who fell in the water

Jason… thanks for the info. ill juss get the cd and the shirt.

  134. Tom GD

    “Nice beard Teppei, rock on.

Btw anyone reading this I’ve startec creating a Thrice Social Network for Thrice fans. The forums are only currently active, come and join. We’ve got quite a few members from WIP there, come say hello.

    http://www.thricescene.com”

The man speaks the truth, WIP is down, come and join!

  135. tim

I’m really excited for a vinyl release. Hopefully it will be a nice box set somewhat like the In Rainbows vinyl set from Radiohead. What would be really cool is if each element had it’s own 10in. disc (like the Kid A vinyl) and there was a large booklet with stories from making the album and tons of artwork. I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

  136. tim

    Also:
I hope the vinyl is higher quality than Vheissue and Artist because they were both pressed rather poorly.

  137. alvaro

    hype.

  138. Kyle

Started a Myspace profile, check it for song adds like Daedalus and B-sides.

  140. Matt

the interview from the OC Register thing is up too.
    its in 2 parts.

    http://www.ocregister.com/articles/thrice-register-soundstage-2009528-alchemy-index

  141. Jordan

Ok guys, so, I just watched the oc interview and was reminded of an old question I’ve had for a while that someone here has to know the answer to. The tatoo on Riley’s wrist (I’ve aopted it as my Thrice logo), Its been on t-shirts and other merch, Riley’s had it on his base drum, etc… looks like this: >/

  142. kate

    what about the tattoo/logo?

  143. kate

If you are wondering Jordan, it IS a logo for thrice.

  144. rivers

Yeah…the pressing on the vheissu vinyl wasn’t that great unfortunately. But, I will admit that the artwork on it was pretty cool. Like you said I’m keeping my fingers crossed that they’ll do this justice. It has the potential to be realllly cool. I’m willing to throw down some cash for a quality product.

  145. Chase

    (Reply to Sam)

IF you even read down this far.. I have some suggestions for other band’s. Well its pretty much the band’s in my top 10.

    Tool
    A Perfect Circle
    Mudvayne
    Chevelle
    Queens of the Stone Age
    A Fire Inside
    Lamb of God
    Bush

Those are my pretty much favorite bands of all time… Most likely they are known to you but I thought I’d throw them out there incase you havn’t listened to them, or have never given them the chance. (I think maybe because they are somewhat well known, some times people don’t give them a deeper look.) I personally love Thrice to death, every album, but I don’t listen to any other bands that are seemingly put into the same category as Thrice, like brand new and others.. I should give them a chance, because I havn’t. But I think Thrice belongs more to the progressive hard rock category ( not that they can be labeled or should, but for sake of ease) So for if some reason you havn’t listened to the bands above, do it!

  146. Chase

Oh I also forgot! Check out this band, they are from Venezuala

    Insomnia
    www.myspace.com/veinsomnia

They are independent but have a really good recording quality and some really awesome songs. You can download there whole first album and part of there upcomming album for free on their myspace. Check it out.

  147. Moony

can someone find the chords for silver wings, it looks simple im just way too lazy

  148. Alvaro

  150. Ian

yeah i have that same logo on my wrist

    thrice

  151. Sebastian

Wow, I know a lot of people have said things about the beards, but wow. All I gotta say. o.O

  152. Phil

I can’t wait for this CD, It is going to be awesome.

  153. Tyler

got my avalon tickets (for the 30th), thank god!!! BTW if any of you are waiting to buy yours DONT. THEY ARE ALMOST GONE!!!!

  154. JP

I don’t know if this has been touched yet or not because I don’t feel like reading every post…but the song “The Sky is Falling” is available to download as a ringtone. It’s only like a 17 second clip, but it is something. I know it’s available through AT&T, not sure about Verizon or anyone else though.

  155. JP

Oh yeah, and so is “digging my own grave,” “moving mountains,” and some other songs off of Fire and Water.

  156. South

    You got a link JP?

  157. Vince

    http://www.thumbplay.com/search/home.do?search=thrice

  158. Vince

“the sky is falling” didn’t impress me. i’m hoping that it’s just the ringtone bit…

also, moving mountains sounds interesting. not sure if i’m going to like the live or the acoustic better.

however, digging my own grave sounds fantastic. it’s a close one between earth and air, but i think earth’s going to win by a nose.

  159. holly

how can you possibly tell what element you are goin to like more? we’ve heard a few songs and only a few in their complete forms.

i will not yet say b/c i think to say is puttin my foot in my mouth.

ps it is kinda funny, many myspacers are leavin’ comments about the “conspiracy theory” song…haha. oh man.

    good night everyone.

  160. Vince

    Holly, I’ve heard:

    Moving Mountains
    Come All You Weary
    The Earth Isn’t Humming
+ a tiny clip of Digging My Own Grave
+ bit of The Lion and the Wolf from AI Preview
+ a bit of Child of Dust from preview

    and:

    Daedalus
    Broken Lungs
    Silver Wings
+ a tiny clip of The Sky is Falling
+ a tiny clip of As the Crow Flies
+ bit of A Song for Milly Michealson from AI Preview

I’ve always been gravitating more towards Earth because of my love for Dustin’s acoustic music, and the thought of mixing it with Thrice-like lyrics and sounds just drives me crazy. Yes, Air made a strong comeback with “Daedalus” particularly, but I don’t know if it’s going to top my love for Earth. Less than two weeks. I can’t wait–literally.

  161. Matt

so i figured i should throw in my recommendations for bands, as i am a part-time DJ…

Secret and Whisper… they’ve got passion
Ivoryline… kind of a newer sound
    Anberlin… “Cities” was great
The Almost… i love Aaron Gillespie
    Underoath… duh
Still Remains… “Of Love and Lunacy” is fantastic
Haste The Day… “Pressure the Hinges”
Destroy the Runner… new CD 4/15 also)
Demon Hunter… latest CD is awesome
Dead Poetic… “Vices”, listen to Paralytic. amazing song
    Chasing Victory… pretty good
    Family Force 5… guilty pleasure
    Jonezetta… kind of like Ivoryline
The Phoenix Effect… local SoCal band, my cousin plays bass. :)
    The Rocket Summer… new sound
The Send… mellow, very very good album

i think that about covers it. :)

  162. Matt

    Vince-
i think i like the sky is falling. it’s a little different.
i’m sure the rest of the song will grow on you. :)

  163. Trask

I love Haste the Day and Destroy the Runner. I’ve kind of been moving away from heavier stuff, but I’ve stuck with those two bands.

One more recommendation from me: Jawbreaker. Those guys were true pioneers.

  164. johnson

    ten days…

for the record it has been alot of fun talking with all of you fans this long.

  165. Matt

    trask-
i’ve been doing the same thing, but (as you probably know) DTR’s new stuff is definately softer, at least less “metal”.

and since you are moving away from the harder stuff, definately check out Ivoryline, Secret and Whisper, and Jonezetta.
and of course, check out The Phoenix Effect. :) (they’re on Myspace and Purevolume).

  166. Sticky

Bravo.. Amazing Acoustic Set!!! “Coom-By-Ya” Could be Appropriate? :?

  167. holly

exactly, a few complete songs and a few tiny clips. it is much different once you hear everything in its completeness.

    thasss all im sayin’.

    ps im unjusifiably lazy today.

  168. Vince

but you can still tell by those how an album will feel. when they first threw up the ten second clips for the first two volumes–this was some site selling the cd, before the release date–people got a feel for what the albums were like. fire–harder, stronger, faster. water–slower, more atmosphere-based. air’s going to be very atmosphere-based too, relying on instruments to create an “environment” for each of the songs. earth is stripped down and bare–both lyrically and musically. so yeah, i mean i can tell what i’ll enjoy more.

  169. holly

so anyone down for bbq chicken?

  170. albert

    haha! who doesnt like BBQ?

  171. Ricky

I just worked at a bbq!

  172. South

    BBQ only diets!!!

  173. travis

    Vince-
i think water was more electronic-based than atmosphere-based.

  174. holly

i got moving mountains as my ringtone hee hee. im stoked.

  175. Jordan

    Thanks Kate

  176. kate

    no probs :)

  177. Joe Harman

    Nightmare of You

I’m into a lot of punk and post-hardcore right now, but I’ve got some quieter stuff in my collection too. John K. Samson of the Weakerthans and Blake Schwarzenbach of Jawbreaker/Jets to Brazil are both excellent lyricists.

  181. kate

-I definitely agree with Trask about John Samson of the Weakerthans being an awesome lyricist. Seriously one of my favorites.

johnny, i LOVEEEEEE the talking heads. they were the soundtrack to my childhood. i am very fortunate that my dad has good musical taste.

and my other fave bands (prepare to be “WTF?”ed cuz i have an extremely random musical taste):

    - eternal sunshine of the spotless mind
    - edward scissorhands
    - hook
    - waynes world

  189. albert

Hook and Edward Scissorhands are timeless!!!

  190. Vince

travis–musically, yeah, but what i meant was that overall the songs focused on the atmosphere to to convey the feelings. fire, for instance, relied on the heavy guitars and the louder voices such as in firebreather and the flame deluge to convey the fire element. water’s background music made it what it is more-so than the singing.

  191. holly

    MOVIES!? sweet…
    on golden pond

Just because I love you all so much, I’ve ripped all the files and joined them together to make one big six minute sampler

    http://www.sendspace.com/file/y7ag5x

(it’s tagged incorrectly in places as I couldn’t change it for some reason)

  203. Weihsin

    Matt-
I’m pretty sure we all love you too :)

  204. chit

this isn’t huge news but i did notice that thrice.net has changed. they got come all you weary up on it now but thats about it, i thought maybe they’d put up the lyrics to the new sonnets but they haven’t yet. those new sample from amazon got me pretty excited though, can’t wait to hear The Lion And The Wolf in its entirety.

  208. Jorge

Damn those samplers, I was doing so well with not getting extremely hyped up for this album too… 8 days is just too long… I want Vols. III & IV NOW!!!

  209. kate

    Matt-

Seriously? You can recite all the lines from the Princess Bride?!?! That’s inconceivable!

    omg i’m soooooo lame.

  210. chaseT

riley, you listen to meshuggah and the raconteurs? howinteresting

this video sounds quite awesome. however, i must say that i dont think yall have been choosing your singles very wisely. they are greats ongs and make for great videos, but i just dont think they make for great singles. we shall see

  211. Matt

    kate-
why do you keep using that word? i do no think it means what you think it means.
    :)

  212. Randy

    DREDG!!!!!!!!! My #1 band ever…

  213. Matt

soooo… i listened to TAITA today, and i decided that i still like Vheissu better. it’s so much moree epic and creative and diverse and just amazing! hahaha
but TAITA is still pretty awesome.

  214. Matt

and i just ordered my four elements shirt.

    stoked!

  215. JP

How does everyone feel about “The Sky is Falling” just based off the clips?

I think I need to hear the song in full before I make my final judgement, but as of right now…I’m not too big of a fan. I think it may be one of the weaker songs out of the entire Index.

  216. JP

to add on to that, if you have seen the movie “Into the Wild,” tell me that “A Song For Milly Michaelson” does not sound like it could be a part of the soundtrack for that movie.

    I love this song.

  217. tim

I’ve never been a big fan of them, but I was wondering what all of you guys thought of the new Panic! at the Disco album. My friend showed it to me, and I think it is the most blatant Sgt. Pepper’s rip-off I’ve ever heard. Have any of you guys heard it?

  218. Adam R

The Sky is Falling reminded me of a Panic! or possibly even Killers song. Im pretty interested since this is a whole new direction for them

  219. Trask

Tim - I’ve heard some of it, and I’m just happy that they stopped being all “WE ARE BLATANTLY TELLING YOU THAT WE CAN MAKE SONGS WITH SUPPOSEDLY CLEVER LYRICS, REALLY LONG TITLES, AND OFFBEAT, PREDICTABLY CATCHY MELODIES” and started being more “Hello, we write pop songs.”

In sum: if I had the opportunity to get the album for five bucks or less, I probably would. It’s not really the kind of music I’m into right now, but it’s not too bad, I guess.

  220. Kyle

I think the Sky is Falling sounds different and quite good.
As for the talk of the new Panic! album I think its pretty damn good, it has a Beatles vibe to it and is a joyful album rather than all the usual negative albums out there. Its also a new path for Panic. I’m open to all kinds of music so I found that album to be great.
    Well,
7 days left ladies and gentlemen.

  221. Matt

    JP-
i actually think The Sky Is Falling sounds pretty cool. the vocals feel very “The Arsonist” to me. the music doesn’t, but the vocals do.
in any case, i really like what i’ve heard so far. i’m excited for it.

  222. Jess

Matt i love you for making that sampler. you are awesome. thankyou

  223. Ryan

The clip from the Sky is Falling sounds like a pre-verse or a fill. I think the tempo and beat give it much more potential than Milly and Crow.

The song that seems the weakest to me (via. clips) is Digging My Own Grave.

  224. kate

    matt-

you’re too awesome for words :D

  225. Chris

I decided to not go with the preorder as I found out with the last volumes that I saw it in Wal-Mart for like $8 before I got mine in the mail for like $15 or whatever it was.

  226. Chris

I decided to not go with the preorder as I found out with the last volumes that I saw it in Wal-Mart for like $8 before I got mine in the mail for like $15 or whatever it was.

  227. Matt

    AHH!!

im trying to change my name to avoid further confusion with the other Matt, but it’s not working.

so alas, i’ll start signing my posts.

    Kate-
which Matt were you talking to??

    Go Halos!

  228. kate

i was refering to the matt who quotes The Princess Bride…but the other matt rocks too! :)

  229. Matt

    kate-
yeah, that was me lol :)

    “bye bye boys!”
    “have fun stormin’ the castle.”

  230. holly

panic at the disco……are you guys serious?

    help.

  231. Moony

holly… thankyou. that mainstream, radio-friendly, stereotype accentuating music should not be mentioned in the presence of thrice… I can’t believe The Alchemy Index is almost complete. The sky is faling reminds me of a faster frodus.

  232. Alvaro

    1. Thrice
    2. The Used
    3. Brand New
    4. Deftones
    5. Dredg

  233. Matt

    It’s that time again.

A new song - The Sky Is Falling - was played on the BBC Punk Show, this time.

As usual it’s all ripped, uploaded and ready to play: http://www.sendspace.com/file/dugn0h

    Enjoy.

  234. Gabriel

Seriously Thrice, we’ve heard enough about the new record. Put it on myspace

  235. Matt

Probably won’t happen until a couple of days before release. If at all.

  236. Chris

That BBC show is screwing us all.
We no longer have the element of suprise.

And I just got a sinking feeling.

I think that Air will have an environmental decay/global warming motif.

    *shudders*

  237. Gabriel

I don’t think they can sell more albums if alchemy index streams on myspace today or friday

  238. Weihsin

    Yeah.
    BBC is screwing us.
There will be no surprise. damn.
I’m sad because of it and happy because I love the songs.
    What a strange feeling. =L

I’m trying to figure out “The Sky is Falling” lyrics, but I can’t find
    all of them?

    Help? Adam?
    Someone?!

  239. JP

    Wow.

After hearing the rip of “The Sky is Falling,” I take back what I said earlier. As a whole, the song is amazing. It’s definately a new step for Thrice, but I actually really enjoy the….pop?? feel? I don’t know what to call it. The hand claps are fun.

    Good Job Thrice.

  240. Sean

The Sky Is Falling is EPIC! Really catchy and done well. I’ve listened to it tonnes, thanks to whoever put it on sendspace.

I can’t make out much of the lyrics though, I can’t wait to find out what they so I can FULLY appreciate the genius!

  241. Joe Harman

not sure how i feel about the sky is falling…maybe it will grow on me.

  242. Hugo

I’ve personally made my peace with the lack of surprises…
The two volumes are more kicked back to me than the first two, so I think that I, although loving every second, wouldn’t get a feeling of being overwhelmed by the enormity of the new songs anyway. That was more the first half’s job for me.

Let’s listen to that rip now, then, lol.

    I

  243. kate

i’ve decided NOT to listen to it. haha. seriously, i’ve heard too much already and i’m sad! Just a few more days boys and girls.

And about the whole Panic at the disco thing…I don’t like them either but I could care less about what you all listen to…the fact that you guys are a fan of Thrice is good enough for me!
