Hey everyone. So a few things…
We’re doing a chat tomorrow at 3:30 pst at absolutepunk.net. To be honest, I’m not really sure how it’s all going to work, but I’m sure there’ll be something that explains it on their site. But yeah, if you’ve got any questions come on over. It will be a cyberriffic experience.

I see that the album has leaked, but I also see that everyone who comments on this site are digging it, and that’s great. We’ve all been super anxious to get this second half out to you all, because from the day we started this project, it’s always been about the whole picture and it’s been hard for us only having one half of that out. Thanks to everyone who have downloaded but are still vowing to buy the record. That’s very honorable :) And of course to those who are trying to “abstain” or “not cheat”, hats off to you gentlemen (and ladies). Self control is a rare gem in these times! But yeah, I’m very excited for next tuesday (4/15) for the album to be officially released. Dustin once again did a great job on the packaging/artwork. On second thought, maybe it’s totally lame of me to be mentioning our record leaked on our site, but no one buys records anymore anyway right? Come on, I dare you to prove me wrong!

I guess it’s obvious that I (we) have been snooping a bit on the comments, and I just want to commend everyone for keeping it clean, good, and productive. I have to admit I was pensive about allowing comments on our updates because we’ve had some disastrous message boards in the past, but this seems to have been working out…at least so far. Keep it up.

Finally, on the news side of things, like the video we posted mentioned, we’re just busy rehearsing and getting ready to leave. It’s going to be a fun tour. Great bands, great peeps, and we’re really excited to be playing some of the Air/Earth songs. Word people.

The Elements are truly life changing.

  5. Ryan

    yay self-control!

    just a few days away.

    very excited.

i’ll be at the first show in SD and most likely the last one at the avalon so i’m stoked to see how your beards have grown.

  6. Jared

    like…fifth? sixth? whatev.

  7. Moony

    TAI > vheissu

  8. princexero

    yeah! TAI>>>Vheissu!!!!!!

  9. chris

seriously u guys have outdone yourself with these cds, soooooo GOOD!

i wanted to abstain, but i just couldn’t, but you can defiantly count on me buying it tuesday.

PLAY DAEDALUS AND DIGGING MY OWN GRAVE AT THE METRO!

  10. Alvaro

    Great job guys!
A very personal and intimate album. Another new facet I didn’t know of you. How do you do to surprise everytime?

I hope to see you live playing your amazing music.
    Thanks guys!

    COME TO SPAIN!!!

  11. elaine

i’ll be abstaining for a while…the record doesn’t come out until the 28th in france, and even then, i won’t be in france, i probably won’t get it until may. boo! i haven’t listened to anything; i haven’t even watched the videos. i’m just gonna wait until i have the record in my hands. you know, like we used to do before the interwebs. anyone with me?

  12. Jimmy

Hmmmm I can’t decide whether I like Vheissu or TAI better… I think I’d probably go with TAI had it all been released as a four-disc. The best 12 songs from TAI probably edge Vheissu, but I think I like Vheissu better than either of the four discs separately. Also if I’d just been able to “abstain”… when I got the CDs I’d have been more blown away by songs like Broken Lungs and Daedalus. Things like that make it hard to judge. But seriously.

Firebreather, The Messenger, Open Water, The Whaler, Broken Lungs, Daedalus, Silver Wings, Moving Mountains, Come All You Weary, Child of Dust. Can you beat that??

Oh and Child of Dust is a work of absolutely heartbreaking beauty that is unrivaled by anything else they’ve done. Not that it’s more powerful, but it’s different. I love it. Play that at my funeral.

  13. Michele

I cannot find the words to express what a beautiful work of art you guys have created. No matter how high my hopes are for anything Thrice does, I’m always blown away. TAI is truly magnificent. Thank you for creating something so beautiful :-) See you guys in San Francisco!

  14. Nick

Stop tempting me to listen before I get the CD!
I just know that I’m gonna be absolutely in love with the second half, just as much as I was with the first :)

  15. Weihsin

    elaine-

ahhhhhh you’re so good to be abstaining for that long!
    I couldn’t do that myself.

    oooohhhhh…download or not???
    It’s so hard.
Teps right, self-control is way better, but how can I (and mostly We)resist when people say it’s the BEST work they’ve ever done.
OH TAI is changing my life for ever!
    These songs are so inspiring.

Actually, so far (!), Daedalus is my favorite song!
I’m in a 3D animation program and I want to create my final demo based on Daedalus lyrics and on all the emotions that this song is brings to me.
oh oh this is gonna be epic.

Thrice is ever going to be the best band ever.

(hey..and I LOVE this message board!)

  16. Weihsin

What’s the Typo thing on TAI??? Anyone knows?

  17. Ben

Listening to the first of Air as we speak. Can’t wait to get my retail copy in the mailbox next week!

And I, too, will see you guys in San Francisco.

  18. Tom

My comment a few posts ago got removed when i suggested that thrice would be playing the lock up stage at reading and asking if anyone else had bought their weekend tickets based on the fact their US tour would be over about the right time for them to go east then head back, arriving in the UK around August. . . If this one is removed/moderated too then i’ll take it as a given.

  19. Tom

    damn.

  20. Tom

and i’ll be buying the record. i can’t wait. i don’t download. NEVER have, NEVER will.

  21. Ben

A Song for Milly Michaelson is going to put me into a surreal melancholy sleep state here.

  22. Sebas

After reading Teps post, I got to the following conclusions:

    - Thrice is my favorite band above all the bands that I listen to. It’s not only their music and lyrics that I like but also their philosophy. I bet that there are not many bands out there that take a look at our comments and also comment in their own site abour their own albums leaking on the internet, I love them being so down to earth;

    - TAITA, Vheissu and TAI are not just three albums but lovely pieces of artwork that I couldn’t help but fall in love with them and I’m thankful that I had the chance to get to know this band (In my country Thrice’s records are not sold anywhere);

    - Its my second night in a row that I dream of myself listenting to volumes III and IV, as I’m still abstaining to download it. What’s worst: the record will be here long after Tuesday 15, as I had to order it via Amazon.

Thank you guys for your music and also to the people (us freaks) that comment here everyday! :)

  23. Weihsin

    Sebas-

ahhhh in Which country are you?? :L

  24. Sebas

Hi! I live in Argentina…At least Amazon still delivers cds over here…

  25. Jason

Is there any chance of you guys posting the album on your myspace for those of us who aren’t into downloading but are going crazy waiting for our pre-orders to arrive?

Either way, much love to you guys and all that you do. See you in Philly and both shows in Anaheim.

  26. Matt

My copy’s in the dispatch process, according to play.com. Good stuff.

Bizarrely, having heard the whole thing, I’m actually looking forward to having it MORE than I was before.

  27. SeanLang

    1. what happened on the old boards that made them go away? my membership to them got messed up a wayyyyyy long time ago so i just stopped visiting and then one day i noticed they were gone. apparently something diabolical? haha

    2. i was all excited about this business, until i remembered that the lack of good tour dates, and that i won’t be able to go any just like last tour. Fail. :(

  28. alvaro

abstain! drugs, alcohol and…Thrice albums (before its released)

    when a Europe tour?

  29. white

TAI is definitely AMAZING, but not better than Vheissu. Vheissu is absolute perfection.

  30. Chris

I think this is my favorite post so far.

Now Thrice is putting posts out like 3 times a week.
Before it was like once a month.

I am so excited to hear the new records, I am going to buy it at Wal-Mart on the day, I decided not to pre-order for a few reasons.

    ***

On a side note, some of you were speculating on what Thrice will do after “Thrice”.
I don’t know exactly what they will do (of course) but I do think the most likely thing that would happen is that Teppei would produce records for other bands. He is good at that.

  31. Cody

I’d have to agree, listening to the whole album has made me a lot more excited to buy the album on tuesday. I think it’s just that, since the first half came out quite a while ago, it had kind of slipped my mind how good it was. But yeah, very excited to go pick it up on Tuesday (as well as the new Ours’ album, OH YEAH!) I know this is unrealistic, but you know what would be awesome: If on your tour, you guys come out and play the Alchemy Index from start to finish, and then do a longer encore of older stuff. That would make me day. Think about it. I wasn’t able to go to the Thrice/Brand New tour, so I’m very excited for your salt lake show.

I think I might have to say that Air is my favorite, but so far I’ve listened to it more than Earth, so that may not be true. Either way though guys, excellent job!!

  32. Cody

And also, a lot of people have been talking about how beautiful Child of Dust is, which it is, but man, Silver Wings is perhaps one of the prettiest songs I’ve ever heard. Beautiful.

  33. John A

Got my preorder today! :-D Absolutely adoring both EPs but made a curious discovery on the Earth disc. Theres a bit of a type - says Vol V instead of IV on the edge of the disc…anyone else notice?

Regardless…fantastic stuff. Not disappointed in the slightest. Good job Thrice :)

  34. Matt

I honestly don’t think I’d be able to pick a favourite out of Child Of Dust and Silver Wings.

Silver Wings is such a spectacular and downright beautiful song, but CoD is so damn powerful…I really can’t choose.

  35. John A

Ironically - I has a typo myself but you get the gist :P

  36. Alyssa

I would like to say I have self-control, but I do not! And loving thrice for what, like 8 years, after a new cd comes out I am just anxious for the next. I do have the leak (and wow, it gave me goosebumps), but I always buy 2-3 copies of your cd’s. One for the car, one I’ll keep unopened, and a third just in case..and put it on my ipod. I’m a nerd for you guys!

  37. omair

DUDE, i havta wait till the actual copy comes out. its just how i roll

plus ofcourse im gonna support you guys!
see you guys a week from next tuesday in dallas.

  38. Sean

I don’t think that you can say Vheissu is not as good as the The Alchemy Index…I really think that it’s a matter of personal preference not fact. I am (like I said on my last post) still listening to Vheissu just about every day because that record has had such a profound influence on my life it’s on a whole different level both with it’s music and lyrics. You can’t go back and listen to Vheissu and be that sounds like fire, water, air, eartch because that means that you have now started to not listen objectively. I mean I listen to Vheissu and The Alchemy Index and still (even though I know certain parts are coming up) get chills listening to the records if it was my first time hearing it. Most of us have all of there albums so no matter what they put out we will love it but I think as fans we can get caught up in comparing past cd’s to past cd’s making them not as good as the other, etc instead of taking them for what they are. As far as the sonnets like I said before Silver Wings is what I’ve been waiting for to come out since the first video they released and musically is my favorite. I love all the sonnets because they all bring something different and fresh to the table and plan on making a copy of just the sonnets on 1 cd. I must say that the end of Child Dust is amazing…I’m talking about musically here folks…I sat with my wife last night (during dinner) just absolutely blown away. (IMHO) It sounds like they were trying to make it sound like the child of dust (us) was either being buried or returning to the ground and the last sounds remind me of either A) footsteps or B)the gravel being thrown on top of the grave “seed must first die before it can grow” something to that effect. It’s going to take me a while to get my head around these cd’s both lyric wise and music wise but I love a good challange. Thrice (guys) can’t tell you enough how much I love these cd’s and I hope I get a change to tell you in person in May…

“We must become the change we want to see in the world”

  39. Eric

Maybe if Thrice didn’t make such life altering music, we wouldn’t have this leak problem. Other than that I blame society, or any other lame scapegoat I can possibly think of.
    Tough call.

I got the pre-order with the 10 dollar shipping, so I’ll pretend that I’m justified.

    See ya’ll on the 23.
    peace.

  40. Matt

The whole album’s now streaming on the band’s Myspace, for anyone yet to hear it.

  41. Greg

Teppei, Yes it is a bummer that albums leak, but some of us still do buy records. As for me, i’m living in Mexico for a year, so it’s hard to find new releases except on itunes, but i bought the first part of the record and the come all you weary EP, so i’m at least buying your stuff. I’ve heard the new one and it’s FANTASTIC. My favorites so far are earth and water. great stuff guys. i’m glad you didn’t remain a stagnant, every record sounds the same band.

  42. HAY

Thrice will be the band that plays the music for the apocalypse.
and I can’t wait for the Come All You Weary video,
    that’s gonna be killer(in a good way)

  43. Matt

hahaha they read our comments. that’s fantastic.
in that case, here ya go Thrice….

Riley- not a bad start for the Halos; can’t wait for Lackey to come back though. How do you like that Torii Hunter signing?
Ed- you play amazing bass. stare at the sun- case and point. I Teppei- i’m diggin the homeless samuri beard. don’t change a thing.
Dustin- you write amazing lyrics, and you’re probably one of the best writers out there. absoultely amazing.

I downloaded it, but you can bet that i’ll be there right after work to buy it on Tuesday. i love the albums!!

    cheers boys (and girls)

  44. Matt

wow, that comment got screwed up. sorry

  45. Melissa H.

i woke up today (shamefully at noon..) and found a whole bunch of new music on Thrice’s myspace.. i have to admit.. that made my day! tuesday had better hurry up and get here. luckily for me best buy is about 2 seconds down the street.. ha.

thank you for all the beautiful music :)

  46. Murphy

I just have to say this is why I like Thrice so much, they’re just way cool guys… and they make life changing music. I almost cried as I sat in a dark room with headphones on and listened to the whole thing. Beautiful. One week in vegas baby! Can’t wait.

  47. Ben

Are you guys still going to put The Alchemy Index on Vinyl?

I really want to buy that.

After listening to Air, it’s different then I expected, but it’s still very good. A whole new side of Thrice. It feels a lot smoother than Vheissu did.

  48. Murphy

I just want to know who’s NOT going to buy the album? I can’t imagine a thrice fan that wouldn’t buy it. If their is one I sure hope you’re homeless or you live in Antarctica, because those are the only excuses… and not even good ones at that.

  49. Weihsin

haha I was thinking Thrice wasn’t reading our comments.
    Well Tepps proved it wrong!

    So I’m happy-happy.

  50. Chris

    Haha Murphy.

I have been trying to recruit my best friend to Thrice for about 2 years now. His favorite band is Metallica (yeah, he’s one of those guys). He doesn’t like Thrice at all. I know, blasphemy huh? His main thing is he doesn’t like the screaming, but on Fire, the only song that there is screaming on is The Messenger and even that isn’t like hardcore-band ala Emery-type screaming. I hate that stuff.

    Whatever, I am rambling.

  51. luke

    i was abstaining from downloading
but then it was put up on their myspace.

    i’m weak. had to listen.

    WOW!

  52. the guy who fell in the water

DAAAAM Its on Myspace too?! Crap… Thrice is even leaking it for everyone. Jeebus. What to do

  53. Josh

hey tepps, just wanted to give you and the rest of thrice a congrats on such a great compilation you’ve all got here. just added child of dust to my myspace page. oh, and i will be buying your album on tuesday and i’m excited to see the packaging that Dustin has done plus i will be seeing you in austin and i can’t wait. :0)

  54. Hugo

    Representin’ Portugal on the comments.
Hmmph, as if I’d share you guys with this country.

Anyway, yeah I got the leak, but not without a pre-order first.

I can only imagine the “ache” of only having half of it out.
I hated what my head came up with:
“Don’t be like System of A Down, go like the Peppers!”.

    Anyway it’s over. Thank you.
The earth disc’s non musical sounds are awesome as well.

    The Alchemy Shuffle: Bliss.

  55. Jason

Love you guys for posting it on myspace. Thanks a million, listening now…

  56. Hugo

BTW, can please someone direct me to some footage of the four dudes playing the Whaler live?
I want to see how they do it.

As a dude who plays drums, I’m really interested in knowing how the beats are distributed between Riley and the rest. I really enjoy how you crash-ride Open Water’s chorus, even though I only have youtube quality for that.

I don’t enjoy Alvaro’s consistent “COME TO SPAIN!” comments (sorry no offense) but if you do go there I’ll see what I can do. The lame part is not having anyone near who enjoys you guys half as much as I do. People here thing you guys stopped making music after the Artist pretty much, due to your leaving the punk scene which was your niche here. Hardcore around here doesn’t get very open minded.

  57. Matt

i added Child Of Dust to my page too… it’s amazing.

so quick question (again, for the guys) because you are snooping the comments :)

Are we anywhere close to getting the meanings of the songs right?

  58. alvaro

sorry hugo if my comments are poor, but I have never seen thrice live, and I think that never see in my life.

I feel so sad because it’s my favorite band 8(

(and sorry for my shitty english).

  59. Matt

okay scratch that… I just changed it to Silver Wings.

and now, I’m going to delete the leaked album from my computer…. i feel bad for having it. i’ll wait for tuesday to come around.

  60. Danny

so i haven’t read the comments on here. but on the previous post someone said that the pre ordered earth disc says volume V and it does! i feel special now. hopefully the real release will have it right. preorder is amazing.

  61. Oscar

Does anyone else hear a huge Radiohead influence in “The Sky is Falling”? The drums sounded very Radiohead-esk, and just the style of the song reminded me of “2+2=5 (The Lukewarm)”. My favorite Radiohead song. :)

I just know that they all love Radiohead, so maybe? Who knows

  62. Chris

I just listened to all the songs on Myspace.

    God.

    Amazing.

Silver Wings = The Whaler (in overall beauty)

Thrice did The Earth Isn’t Humming better than Frodus and Frodus made a good song with that. I downloaded it from iTunes as soon as I knew Thrice was covering that song.

I forgot that in Child of Dust, the element is personified and I thought of literally a father burying his son. I was wrong. But I totally love it.

I liked these sonnets better then the other ones (IMHO)

  63. docta brown

i just wanted to say thank you to all four of you guys for putting out such an amazing piece of work. The thoughts and emotions you get from each ep are so different and incredible. When i hear digging my own grave i for some reason think of dustin singing it on a 30’s type time era in a bar and teppei playing piano or something i have no idea why, anyway not to ramble on but can’t wait to see you guys both nights in chicago.

  64. elaine

Weihsin–thanks! haha, i’m pretty good at abstaining from things…like chocolate…but this’ll be tougher, haha. i just want to re-create the feeling i used to get when i was waiting for a cd to come out and then i’d go to best buy to get it and then i’d go straight to my room and shut my door and just listen to the cd from beginning to end with the booklet in my hands.

from everyone’s reviews here, i’m really excited, and i think it’ll be worth the wait. wish i was back in the states!

  65. Jason

My friend and I are driving about 16 hours from Kansas City to Denver and back, just to see you guys. I cannot wait for the show.

  66. Ryan

I downloaded the album, and i will buy the album Tuesday.

I was thinking about this. People have been talking about thrice playing stuff from identity crisis. I dont know about that. Its a great album, It was good at the time and good now. But i dont think it will fit in with some of the new songs.

  67. the guy who fell in the water

should i go to SF show and Hollywood show?

    Yes? NO? “ITS PROBABLE!”

  68. Hugo

alvaro - never mind me. I haven’t seen them yet either, and their my fave band since the beginning of 2006 if I can recall. I’d really like meeting them to after a show, but I don’t even know hot to do that and I’d probably go up to them and not have anything smart or cool to say but “AWESOME!”. Maybe go all drummer stuff with Riley if he’d put up with it.
And your english is pretty good. Don’t apologize for that.

And now you know your pleas are actually read by the band, lol.
    If it works… regret NOTHING!

  69. Weihsin

Anyone’s going to chat with Thrice on absolutepunk.net tonight?

    I can’t be there. damnit.

Ask them good questions and post their anwers here after!

    Ok?

  70. Blake

I downloaded the album too…*tisk* *tisk* shame on me. I know.

Usually I do that because most albums coming out these days only have two or three songs on them that are any good and so I will either download the leaks or do the iTunes thing. HOWEVER, I downloaded TAI because I just couldn’t wait any longer! When this is the only record that I am truly waiting with bated breath for this year then it is a temptation, and I am weak wretch.

Nonetheless, I have bought every album (I have bought TIOS and TAITA two times and Vheissu three times) and I will be the first in line at Best Buy on Tuesday morning so I can complete my collection!

As for the record (seeing as how I have now heard it because of my sinful deeds!), I am utterly speechless! Something told me that I would like this half the best and it lived up to it. I hooked my Ipod up to my speakers, turned out all the lights (it was about midnight) and just sat in my recliner and let the music just wash over me and I was deeply moved. If only all bands had as good of writers as Dustin, then the music industry would be raised in my opinion. Nonetheless guys, absolutely stunning!

    My favorites on Air:

The Sky is Falling (hand claps are always good)
A Song for Milly Michaelson (wow. i haven’t seen that movie in years but this song makes me want to see it again!)
    Silver Wings (gorgeous)

    My favorites on Earth:

The Earth Isn’t Humming (not many bands can make stripped down sound heavy)
The Lion and The Wolf (I ain’t gonna lie, this song creeps me out…what in the world were you thinking about when you wrote this one! Thats what I want to know!)
And OF COURSE, Child of Dust with its amazing conclusion!

You guys are awesome! Keep it up! You are one of the few remaining bands that makes me keep my faith in the music industry (that maybe greed doesn’t control all things)! Can’t wait to buy it on Tuesday!

P.S. Are the proceeds from this record going to Blood:Water Mission or to another charity?? Just curious :)

  71. Vince

Teppei–trust me, even though I have the downloaded songs burned onto a disc and they sounds GREAT compared to the leaked Volumes 1 and 2, I will not only be using the pre-ordered copy (I paid $27 for it btw, that’s how much I love you gents ;)) but I will be buying another copy to keep in the shrinkwrap.

AND whatever vinyls and other stuff comes out.

I’m glad you guys are cool with the “leak.” It shows real confidence in your music, knowing that when we listen to it, we’ll want to buy it. Cheers…and amazing album guys. I love it.

  72. Vince

Oh, and at first I had Child of Dust on my page.
I’d like to say, too, that I’ve been writing a six-part poem
for a couple months now, ever since Come All You Weary came out
and Child of Dust has inspired the ending.
Reading it, it’s not like reading the songs,
but you can definitely see some influences in it,
(though I did reference three lines from Come All You Weary),
and I may even post the whole poem when I’m done for you fellas.

But then I changed the song to A Song for Milly Michealson,
because it’s now me and my girlfriend’s song–gosh it’s beautiful.

    Cheers cheers and cheers.

apparently that was very important, huh Vince? :)

  77. Kyle

Wow I listened to the vols 3 and 4 and they are amazing.
I dont understand why people are bashing As the Crow Flies,
I think its an incredible song. Every song is great in its own way,
and I can choose no favorites. I can’t wait to go buy it tuesday!

  78. Jorge

The chat with Thrice on absolutepunk.net is in like 5 mins, and I still have no idea where or how it’s going to happen, anyone here know?

  79. Dale

all my friends make fun of me because i dont listen to anything from the bands i like until i buy their cd’s.. i didnt listen to anything from vheissu for 4 months until i could buy it… it was the worst time period of my life

  80. Matt

seriously, does anybody know how the chat is going to go down?

  81. alvaro

  84. Jorge

Yeah, I’m pretty sure the chat’s on today, but I thought it was going to be at 6pm EST, it’s actually at 6:30 EST, 10 mins from now, but I still don’t know how or when this chat is going to occur lol anyone know?

  85. alvaro

This Friday, April 11th, at 6:30 p.m. EST, Thrice will be chatting on AP.net

    so…where is it?

  86. alvaro

Teppei took his virtual hat off to me! My inner fanboy is exploding!

Okay, off to the Thrice chat.

  91. Trask

    Teppei answered my question! Huzzah!
(For anyone who’s interested, a.k.a. no one, I’m “only the clouds” on the AP.net forums.)

  92. Ken

music of the greatest from the greatest

  93. alvaro

    yeah! these beards are real….haha

  94. alvaro

I would like people who were constant supporters of the band to remember that we never condescended to write what we thought they might want to hear, but instead invited them to join us in walking into the unknown.

  95. Jeff

no need for self control, my copy came today! Yea!!!! I do got to tell you guys, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE WONDERFUL and INSPIRING MUSIC!!!

Your talent will not be matched by many musicians…if any…Thank you for sharing it with us!!!

    LOVE THE WHOLE PROJECT!!!

    Thanks!
    =)

  96. Denise

The chat was fun, guys! Thank you! ^_^

  97. Craig

Woohoo! I’ll make sure to catch that chat, i’m on AP pretty much the whole time on my computer (along with this site) anyways so i’ve just got to make sure i’m home.

Sucks I can’t say i’m one of those few that have abstained… but atleast I’ve vowed to buy the CD at the day of release like I should!! Never missed a first day Thrice CD purchase since IOS and i’m not about to break the tradition. I’m sure the artwork will be amazing as Dustin has an awesome taste in artwork. I would have pre-ordered, but in the past i’ve had issues with pre-orders so i’ll be buying tuesday… although from the sounds of it pre-orders are already arriving so looks like I messed up.

As for the CD PLEASE play A Song For Milly Michaelson at the avalon in hollywood. That song is tied with Child of Dust as my favorite song. Child of Dust has the best ending i’ve ever heard, but A Song For Milly Michaelson is just overall breathtaking… the way it is slow paced and little things in the lyrics like switching to “there’s a way where there’s a will” rhyming “you” with “you” and slant rhymes etc. really pull off the vibe of showing the song from the perspective of an autistic child. I can’t begin to describe how much I love it besides that when I put my headphones on and sat down and really let it move me… by the end of the song I almost cried. No song has ever been that strong on me and I commend you all for writing something so beautiful.

A bit longer than I originally planned… but also wanted to say hurray us for keeping the comments clean and loving and great job Thrice!

  98. Kyle

So, thrice dudes, since you read these I’m hoping you’ll check this out. Dustin, you said on your AP thing that you think the 9/11 stuff is a little, odd, out there, masked, whatever euphemism for “conspiracy” you want to use. Anyways, check this out: http://www.loosechangeguide.com/LooseChangeGuide.html

It really helped me make sense of stuff so I hope it helps anyone else who reads it

  99. Katie

THEY ARE STREAMING THE ENTIRE ALBUM ON THEIR MYSPACE NOW!

  100. kate

crap…i caved…i’m listening to the album on myspace as i type this. AMAZING.

  101. Cody

SO SOON!!!! I heard most of it leaked and I apologize for that but I think any real Thrice fan will buy it either way. So no loss on the leakage right?

  102. luke

i have dial up and the mail didn’t come today.
    oh gee.
    but oh well.
    I’m listening to lost continent.

  103. Matt

    doods!!
that chat was soooooo cool. thanks for doing that Thrice!
    i got like… 5 or 6 questions answered (i am childofdust)

    dustin-
you’re answer about the sonnets was almost kind of helpful hahaha
but i really appriciate the answer about the Night Diving whispers. (for anyone who missed it, there are no actual lyrics… i asked)

    riley-
    dude, our Halos sucked tonight.

  104. Melissa H.

the AP chat is so much fun :) i wish i could have participated.. too bad i had to work.. thank you for doing it! (i’m still reading it.. but so far Riley’s “back away from the bong, son.” made me laugh so hard.. )
and.. i listened to the albums on their myspace.. i can’t decide if that counts as caving.. i mean.. they did put it up.. haha. i still can’t wait for tuesday :)

  105. Braunson

The Sky is falling also contained the surprisingly addictive handclaps reminicent of “The Microphones” or “Most Serene Republic” while staying very fast beat coupled with the awesome Guitar tones on the Air EP, then As the crows flys has a certain Sufjan Stevens feel and beautiful imagery of the Crow’s life brings quite the smile not to mention Thrice’s programmed music at it’s finest with Silver Wings, Earth Ep has been the biggest surprise this year. At first I really hoped that Thrice and more specificly Dustin wouldn’t allow Earth to turn into “Please Come Home the sequel” but upon hearing the first seconds of the EP and the different atmosphere Moving Mountains portrayed I knew I was in for one wild 20 minutes. However its with The lion and the wolf where the haunting ghost synth sound made me smile all the more, not to mention the awesome groove and dark drive of “the earth isn’t humming”, and the pleasant surprise (won’t spoil) upon Dust CHild that closed the album with a “thunk” so to speak. Upon reviewing Fire and Water with my friends we originally found Vheissu more epensive in its tonal and diversity given it the only 2 element serving ( I should’be known better). Indeed this Band has redifined itself yet again and surpassed even the awesomeness of Vheissu even after doing so with every album they’ve put since I.C., and Teppei Props to producing I hope my band can pull some inpiration and hopefully attempt to produce solid original demo tunes/ creative tones with our Garage Band as reffered to in the Alchemy Video Blogs, Tuesday coudln’t come any sooner!!

No one can be told what the Alchemy Index is…… you have to hear it for yourself :)

    ————————-

that is the most amazingly hillarious response ever, haha.
i love their sense of humor.

  107. Vince

I wasn’t there for the chat, but I do have a question, in which I hope you can answer Dustin–

in formulating the concept for the Alchemy Index, in which I’m sure it came from the idea of Alchemy and the importance of all four elements, did you ever consider creating a song, or a disc, or whatever-it-may-be to represent the Elixir of Life? Part of me feels like the whole record is unfinished–as if it needs that Elixir Vitae to tie the strings together, to make it whole. But then at the same time, I question whether something like that would be worth releasing to us. It would seem almost too personal, too important to be shared with the world–but, instead, kept to yourselves?

I know you have to have thought about this before. Or else I’m just a huge nerd.

PS: I’d really love to get my Earth disc signed by you fellas. It is my favorite out of all four. I’ll be seeing you in Richmond. Hopefully I’ll get a chance, aye?

  108. Craig

I missed out on the chat but i’m oh so glad it’s there to read. Favorite responses are when the guy asked who sings female vocals in “Digging My Own Grave” and Riley said “your mom”, Ed’s comment about Teppei being a mean quesadilla maker, and for some reason Riley saying “i’m not one to make you break out an abacus and a calculator” made me laugh real hard… not sure why I laughed as hard as I did.

Anyways can’t wait till the avalon show! Hopefully this time i get a chance to talk to you guys for a bit, you’ve all inspired me in leaps and bounds beyond anything else. Keep up the great work and love all of you.

  109. Hugo

    very helpful chat.

I know it’s not necessarily the best thing to do, but I’d like to know exactly who wrote what on the Index, like on Vheissu.

I was pretty sure there wouldn’t be b-sides, but now we know.

Not sure how I feel about them never working with a producer again.
It’s good to know they are happy about it but there ARE good producers.

    The Sonnets are kicking ass.

  110. Hugo

(when I say never again work with producer I meant that for the upcoming albums they don’t seem inclined to do so, sorry for the accidental spin)

  111. Craig

Also because i’m a fellow WoW player who likes to pretend that i’ve never heard of the game… I know how you feel Ed… I mean the only reason i’m not playing it right now is because I can’t talk to people AND listen to Earth/Air by fully appreciating it. See! There’s one thing greater than my WoW addiction. My Thrice addiction.

  112. Corey

Believe me when I say that I’ll be there when the store opens so I can buy my (official) buy of III + IV; you guys deserve at least that much from us loyal fans :). I also really agree with you guys that it’s all about the big picture, and the whole with these albums, so it’s nice to have a little playlist set aside for this project of yours. Though I’m afraid the rest of my library might get a bit neglected…

Can’t wait to see y’all on May 20th, I’m especially excited about the open setlist idea. As long as that setlist includes “The Sky Is Falling”, that is :)

  113. Mick

well i bought all your albums up too now and ive gotten all those leaked before hand. that says something right there for your music. and a review in Alternative press on your guys got me onto another band whom i had not know about. Murder by death.

  114. Evan

well, i must admit i got the leaked version again. But don’t worry i am still going to buy the record, I always do, haha. I have been doing this since Vheissu and its worked out so far. So I listened to Earth and Air today at work a few times. And I absolutely love it. The songs flow perfectly and capture the essence of each element. Its hard to pick a favorite song because i love EVERY song you guys create. After listening to these two i listened to the whole Alchemy Index. It was musical euphoria. You DO actually get a sense of the elements when you listen to it all. Its hard to explain but i felt it. What was really surprising to me were the guys I work with, they actually heard some of it and said they enjoyed it and were going to pick it up, and all they listen to is Steely Dan, Wilco, and Stevie Ray Vaughan (all great acts), and they are the most cynical people I know when it comes to music, I can’t bring anything in without it getting bashed, but they liked it and kept on asking about it which was cool.

Anyways, Congradulations on The Alchemy Index. You guys have shown how far you guys can take your music and I can’t even fathom what you guys will produce next. Thank you for being an inspiration. All of you. If it weren’t for you guys then I would have never been involved in music as much as i am now.

April 15th and May 4th here we come!

  115. israel

Well, I have not listened yet…. I will wait. I do not think I can make it to any of the shows :( but just having TAI in its fullness will inspire me to no end.

Teppei, Dustin — how is it touring while having children and wives? Just curious. My wife and I are expecting our 2nd Son, and I can not imagine leaving them for more than a couple of days. Thank you for making sacrifices to bring us the greatest music ever made.

  116. israel

    @Vince-

You were speaking of a fifth disc to tie the four elements together? In ancient times when the elements were spoke of as a group, there was always 5 elements water, fire, earth, air, and the 5th that combined all of them, space. There was a symbol used to represent this; it was four circles in a cross formation with a 5th circle in the middle that overlapped and tied the other four together. Anyway…if the Elixir Vitae is too personal ….maybe a 5th disc of the element Space (b-sides) or something.

  117. Vince

    @israel

yeah, the one thing differing among most cultures is the “fifth” element, and even though it’d be nice to see, i’d rather see the elixir vitae represented somehow. like you said, some called it space. others called it “idea” or merely a form of divine inspiration, or even “void” (these were not combining them, just a dif. element). unfortunately there are no b-sides though.

  118. Katie

i am so pumped for the tour.

i really want to hear the sky is falling… i want to hand-clap the crap out of it :-D :-D

my dad is in the other room listening to coldplay.. i think i am going to buy him a copy of vols. 3 & 4.

  119. Holly

I love you guys. I would buy the record 10x over. serious. this is your livelyhood…however it is spelled and don’t you worry, we won’t letyou guys down by ripping you guys off.

  120. Logan

Mine arrived in the mail today! A few days early, that’s weird. But, oh my gosh, I love it. Even earth, which I was the least excited about, is amazing!

  121. johnson

i feel like after that chat we have really bonded with them a little bit.

  122. Melissa H.

to katie : “i want to hand-clap the crap out of it”
i was thinking the same thing :)

  123. luke

    Vince and israel

the 5th disc could be the next album….

after these four discs the next album will be the next step,
an amalgamation of the alchemy index tieing every thing together?

    just a thought….

  124. Craig

luke I was hoping on that a bit :)

The Alchemy Index is great, some of the best group of songs i’ve ever eargasmed over… but my nerdy side wants a 5th disc. I mean, i’ve got all of what I think the lyrics are to the 12 songs typed up in word to see when I get the booklet how correct I was with interpretting it. Yep, i’m lame.

On a side note, I also want to handclap the crap out of “The Sky Is Falling”. I was listening to it yesterday and my friend walked in as I was alone clapping to it and he just laughed at me.

  125. Robyn

I pre-ordered the album and received it yesterday! I hadn’t heard too much of the new tune-age until I popped the CD in. It just keeps getting better and better! You guys can do no wrong in my eyes. I absolutely love all the volumes! I can’t wait until you play Chicago on the 16th and 17th of May. It’ll be a great way to send me off to Scotland. Keep rockin’!

  126. Robyn

P.S. Beards are slowly taking over the U.S. There was actually a contest at my work for the best one! Love it!

  127. holly

    i wish i could grow abeard……

not. i want a man who can. haha.

anyways, so far i like a song for milly michaelson…favorite.

  128. adam?

so did they answer the seemingly ridiculous “OMGZ this could be thrice’s last album!!!~!~” talk that’s been going on lately?

also, i would want their next work to be something closer to the artist in the ambulance. it’s heavy without being immature, and we’ve just gotten three straight albums worth of elementy-type stuff. so i think it’s time to do another TAITA-style disc. but obviously in a kinda different direction cause you guys never do the same thing twice.

  129. Jordan

Lol, like half the guys in my school tried to see who could grow the best beard in November. “Novem-beard” was spectacular.

  130. Jess

    the sky is falling.. favourite

  131. Craig

By the way, Thrice has done something I thought would never happen. My dad always used to hate when I listened to IOS or AITA because of the screaming. He always took it be angry music and never even gave it a chance even though I told the screaming was just for more emotion in the song.

Anyways, I went to pick him up at the airport and made him listen to The Alchemy Index and he really liked it. For a good 15 minutes he refused to believe it was the same Thrice I listened to when I lived at home. Then he went on about how great it sounded and that maybe he was quick to judge the early albums. Now I let him borrow my CD’s and he says he loves them.

After 4 years going on about how my taste in music was horrible he’s starting to listen to the music he said was so bad. Never did I imagine that to happen so thank you Thrice! He loves earth most of all, but he thinks “A Song For Milly Michaelson” is one of the best songs he’s ever heard (even more because it was one of his favorite movies for awhile). You guys have outdone yourselves on this and can’t wait to see you guys soon.

  132. Nick

I’m listening to my pre-order now!!! I’m nearly through Daedalus and I am in love already. Best release of the year.
Thanks guys, you have done an amazing job, as always

  133. Logan

Air and Earth are better than Fire and Water as far as I’m concerned… so good, that I’m having anxiety because I can’t decide what song to listen to at any given time. smashed my expectations to pieces and then slammed the door on their nuts. I’m considering having an implant in my ear canal that will play the discs 24/7.

and I think Thrice’s next album, whatever it may be, is going to sound more like Air than anything. I feel like that’s the direction they’re pushing in with the most force… anyone agree?

  134. Katie

so did they answer the seemingly ridiculous “OMGZ this could be thrice’s last album!!!~!~” talk that’s been going on lately?

Originally Posted by MarkyMark1984 View This Post

Do you guys have a preference of style on which direction the band will be going with your next release after the alchemy index? Going back to the heavier side of things or going forward with the experimental sound?

ED: I don’t think we have a specific style that we will be going for with future albums… Much of what made this project cool to do also made it difficult. I think that a lot of the “Thrice sound” has always come from all of us writing and all of us working to put the different sounds and ideas together in a cohesive mix. With this project much of that was set aside so the songs would have a specific feel geared towards the elements. I’m actually very excited about making new music with no constraints on the direction of songs. Especially after this project which pushed us to experiment quite a bit. I think we will continue to write whatever comes out of us. I know that is kinda vague… but don’t necessarily know what the next record will sound like as well.

    from the thrice chat…

sounds like they definitely aren’t calling it quits yet!

  135. Trask

If Thrice ever decides to do other things with their lives, I at least hope they’ll pull a Dead Poetic and continue putting out albums, but just stop touring.

  136. Matt

    trask-
    haha that would be amazing

  137. Hugo

Although it’s the last thing I want, I think we can all agree that if they stepped out now, they’d pretty much leave little to prove to the world musically.

The best thing about getting the last discs oddly enough is that it makes thr first two sound even better.

    You guys… awesome possum

  138. alvaro

i think that they will never stop doing music because it is his life. Maybe one day they will separate…but they still have a large audience and a lot to offer.

  139. Hugo

another BTW… I don’t know if anyone these days is sort of “record keeping” thrice’s interviews and stuff, but if anyone has cut out the band’s answers (and answered questions) from the AP dialog I’d like to have access to it, please. A lot of gold info.

And I shall stubbornly repeat my request for footage of the four playing The Whaler, if anyone knows where I could catch a glimpse.

  140. Jess

    got my pre order!
    currently in lurrvvveee.

  141. JP

After reading that nice little comment, I feel as though Thrice will put out something resembling TAITA…but more like a part 2 kind of thing….

Does anyone feel that way as well?

  142. jon

ok i got my preorder on friday and i have a huge HUGE problem with it.
it is amazing dont get me wrong but….

ON THE ERATH DISC IT SAYS “Thrice, The Alchemy Index Vol. V”!!!!

WHY DOES IT SAY FIVE!?!?!?!? SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME I AM VERY DISTRESSED AS EVERYWHERE ELSE IT SAYS THE EARTH SHOULD BE VOLUME 4

  143. Mitch

I havent (nor will I) downloaded the album, but I have listened to the entire thing on Myspace and I love it. Just wanted to let yall know that I never plan on pirating this out of the vast amount of respect I have for you guys. I tend to pirate a lot, but I love you guys and your music so much, I vow to buy the 2nd half, as I did the first. Can’t wait to see yall in ATL!

  144. kate

haha maybe there IS a secret element that they aren’t telling us about?

  145. Katie

i mean, if you think about it…
thrice are VERY similar to sigfried and roy…
ABUNDANCE of tricks up their sleeves (& white tigers..)!

  146. Logan

Jon… I noticed that too. I think it’s a typo, nothing more. also, on the lyrics page for Silver Wings, “of” is mistakenly spelled “off”. I guess they didn’t spend too much time proofreading. doesn’t bother me too much though, the music makes up for it. :P

    Cheers.

  147. Vince

Haha relax Jon. It’s probably just a typo. Unless, that is, the Air disc is Volume IV. Or if the album label says IV and V, or III and V.

    Though that’d be sweet huh?

  148. Matt

Hahaha, calm down man! It’s just a typo - I’ve noticed quite a few of them in the lyrics for Vols 1 & 2. Methinks the band needs a better proof-reader :-P

  149. Andrew

I just listened to air and earth for the first time on the Thrice myspace. AMAZING. When you listen to any one of the elements, it’s so hard to believe that the same people wrote the music of the other elements. Fire and Water and Air and Earth all sound so different. And not just that, but they really embody the elements they are meant to represent.

When I heard “Digging my own grave” I pictured Thrice playing it in some beat up, old Western saloon where the bandits drink. That’s just what it reminded me of for some reason.

  150. sam

thrice could go ANYWHERE from here…

  151. Matt

seriosly though… does anybody else hear 1940’s Nazi Germany in “The Lion and The Wolf”???
not in a bad way; it’s just fits the time period

  152. adam?

maybe volume IV is actually heart. and then when you play all five CDs at once, captain planet explodes out of the sky.

  153. Chris

    Haha adam

  154. Benji

I buy C.D’s!!!!!!! I have a friend who downloaded the air and earth disks and he offered to make me a copy but i was like NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! cos i would rather wait =D its so cool how Thrice dont really care to much about the C.D being leaked… thats real musician like!

  155. rivers

i downloaded, but vow to buy the vinyl… ahem…

  156. Albert

    -Matt

actually…i hear a Tim Burton type of thing in “The Lion and the Wolf”

  157. Chris

Does anyone know what the chords on piano are in the couplet of the sonnets?

  158. Logan

Chris, I think each of the couplets is actually in a different key, the chords are just the same relative to one another. If you want to think of it in intervals, I think it would go:

    Root - 5th - 4th

So if you were in C Major, for example, it would go C - G - F. If you were in D Major, it’d be D - A - G. And so on.

  159. Ricky Denim

So good to finally have all 4 discs. On the weekend my mate and I got some candles and sat down and listened to all 4 elements on random(highly reccommended)and drank some german absinthe :)
    It was an incredible experience.

Thrice if your reading, I really like the idea someone mentioned about your next album being the 5th element or grand tincture. The 4 elements combined to create the elixir or transcendance of life. Would be awesome. Probably a bit alchemical for you, but hey, you did call it the Alcheymy Index :)

  160. Logan

In fact I’ve just investigated and I believe Child of Dust is in C Major/A Minor. Thus the couplet would indeed be C G F.

  161. Jimmy

Lion and the wolf - I’m waiting for the lyrics on that one, but my first guess has to do with Dante. In the beginning of The Inferno he talks about the three representations of sin as the Leopard (i forget), the Lion (violence), and the She-wolf (incontinence). Hence the wolf would be in your bed… maybe? It could be neat. Anyway, that’s what I hear in the song. “the wolf and lion crave the same thing in the end”

  162. Russell

Well, they sent out the album a little early so i had a lovely surprise yesterday in the mail. Hard to believe that this is from the same band that recorded IOS. This is phenomenal. Thank you guys so much for making such amazing music. You inspire me to always strive to grow in both music and life.

  163. jon

haha thanks everyone i was kinda just confused as to how there could be a typo on the CD itself.
and i put it in all caps to get peoples attention, i wasnt really freaking out haha

i love both of those CDs, i thought i was gonna be like “well earth and air are gonna put me right to sleep” but the thing is that air was actually like kinda poppy in a sense but still thrice and i loved the daedalus track because i always thought thrice would take one of their previous songs and grow off of it. plus i can like feel the pain of daedalus when dustin sings the last part. also silver wings is just amazing.
with earth i thought it was gonna be all countryish but it really wasnt, it was really haunting. i got the chills listening to child of dust which might be the best of the sonnets, if not silver wings.

i approve, not that anyone cares what i think haha

  164. Chris

    I agree with Jon.

I really, I mean really liked Silver Wings and Child of Dust.

I listen to them as songs, which I didn’t with the other ones because they don’t really feel like songs to me.

I anticipated Silver Wings ever since I heard it on the first video. It’s so beautiful. Child of Dust gives me chills.

  165. Ricky Denim

Can anyone comment on the artwork? I cant wait to see whats in there.

  166. Logan

the artwork is definitely better and more fine, and the packaging is overall more pretty, if only because of the gold-parchment-looking background of the lyric booklet as opposed to I&II’s plain white.

  167. Dwayne Charrington

    Hey Tepps,

I admit that I downloaded the leak but I appreciate you guys so much that I just couldn’t help it really. The downloading of your leaked album was an involuntary action, my inner Thrice-geekness took over me. In-case you weren’t already aware, I am in the process of building a social network website based on you guys called “Thrice Scene”. It’s a central hub for all Thrice fans to converse and share, explore and learn. It’s basically Myspace for Thrice fans only it’s not Myspace.

I congratulate you on your new and final piece of The Alchemy Index, I think the Air and Earth discs are absolutely spectacular without a doubt and I and all the members and future members of Thrice Scene look forward to your future releases.

It would seem as though you guys don’t put a foot wrong when it comes to your music and I admire you guys for that, don’t stop making the music that has massive impacts on peoples lives and gets them through the day.

    - Dwayne Charrington.

The Lion and the Wolf lyrics:

The lion’s outside of your door, the wolf’s in your bed.
The lions claws are sharp and for war the wolfs teeth are red.
What a monstrous sight he makes mocking mans best friend.
Both the wolf and lion crave the same thing in the end.
The lion’s outside of your door, the wolf’s in your bed.

The wolf he howls, the lion does roar, the wolf lets him in.
The lion runs in through the door, the real fun begins.
A stable thrash upon you will rip open your flesh.
The lion eats his fill and then the wolf cleans up the mess.
The lion’s outside of your door, the wolf’s in your bed.
The lion’s outside of your door, the wolf’s in your bed.

  169. Ryan

…I think it might possibly symbolize… the government?

  170. the guy who fell in the water

    lol what

  171. holly

OVERWHELMING MAJORITY……thrice is the best band and has released the greatest cd set of the year!

    TADAH!!!. SERIOUSLY. GO THRICE

  172. Matt

    ryan-
highly doubtful. but i’m curious… how’d you come up with that?

  173. Jeff

The artwork is pretty awesome…it is similar to the first two volumes…the biggest difference is the actual air disk…it looks as though it has ‘glow-in-the-dark’ writing on it, but alas after many minutes in the bathroom holding it to the light and turning it off, it is just white writing on the ‘off-white’ disk…still very cool…I wonder if they thought about doing it in glow-in-the-dark paint…hmm

Well worth getting the actual disk as opposed to the download, Dustin did such a fantastic job on it, you can tell he spent a long time on it…THANKS MAN!!! =)

  174. Jason

I don’t get why some of you guys instantly compare Thrice’s songs to other bands music. I take it for what it is, Thrice doesn’t sound like anything but Thrice to me.

  175. elaine

I’m reading the AP chat right now. Thanks for answering so many questions and for injecting humor into it. Mainly the cute puppy as an answer to Barack or Clinton from Eddie and Riley’s “we are gonna play deadbolt 20 times. that’s it. that’s the setlist.” hilarious, guys.

  176. alvaro

    Only 1 day.

    ggrrrr!

  177. the guy who fell in the water

So close, and the album will be in my hands
May 25th is when i try and get thrice’s sigs on my cds!! Please stay after the show please!!!

I know its a long shot, but please!
The last time i met any of you was in 2003 warped tour, after riley hurt his back, Teppei came off stage and took a picture with me and my buddy. I dont expect him to remember this, but. man all I could say at the moment was something like.. your music inspires me, or something lame. haha I cant believe it.

Anyways, You guys, please do what you guys do best and stay and hang out a little after the show in San Fransisco.
You guys ROCKED slim’s last time. Now to rock the big fish. Im stoked.

  178. Hugo

You guys remember when some of us (so long ago lol) had a go at Lost Continent?
I’m personally totally over it. With the last discs, and the AP chat, the song is just right to me now.
I think the thing that really tipped it over for me was knowing that Burn The Fleet might have been on Water. Not only do its hybrid lyrics make more sense now, since it’s a bridge song, but I have absolutely no mini resentment left about Water’s lack of rock and drums.
The “going down” lyrics while imperfect are sung in the way that best fits the song, so whatever about that.

  179. israel

Does anyone know how difficult it is to find (if even small clips) songs from First Impressions?? Just curious….

  180. Katie

    israel,
you can find the whole thing on youtube.

    http://youtube.com/profile_videos?p=r&user=ThriceX3&page=5

that user has some AWESOME thrice videos..
i actually kind of think it’s one of the guys, or at least someone from their crew..

  181. Ben

So, now that we have the big picture, here’s my rank order:

    1. Water
    2. Fire
    3. Earth
    4. Air

This wasn’t really the order I was expecting before hearing the final project, but listening to the new stuff made me realize how much I love Water, and how damn good Fire is in spots. Earth surprised me with some really great tracks in styles I wouldn’t normally pay much attention to, while Air has some great bits and pieces, but is generally pretty weak lyrically. It’s not without its bright spots either, though, and Silver Wings is one of the better sonnets in the collection.

  182. Jorge

Israel, if you look up first impressions on megadownload.net, I’m pretty sure you’ll be happy ;)

  183. Chris

It just floors me everytime I hear any of Thrice’s previous records.

I can’t believe that it’s the same band!

  184. Vince

Hugo, I’m still not the greatest fan of the line, but I’ve accepted it nonetheless.

What I wish for Water is that they’d put a heavier song on it, almost like Hold Fast Hope.

    My ranking:

    Earth
    Fire
    Air
    Water

    I ranked it by this:

Earth–Digging My Own Grave, Lion and the Wolf, Child of Dust, Come All You Weary, Moving Mountains
Fire–Firebreather*, Burn the Fleet, Flame Deluge
    Air–Milly Michealson, Daedalus, Silver Wings
Water–The Whaler, Kings Upon the Main

*Fire gets the edge on Air because Firebreather is one of my all-time favorite Thrice songs,

and now that I’m doing rankings…well time for a Top 5 song ranking (not in order):

    1. Child of Dust
    2. Firebreather
    3. For Miles
    4. The Earth Will Shake (or Digging My Own Grave)
    5. A Song for Milly Michealson

and hell, how about an if-there-was-a-best-of-alchemy-index-disc-then-it-would-look-like-this:

    1. Firebreather
    2. Moving Mountains
    3. The Whaler
    4. A Song for Milly
    5. Silver Wings
    6. Daedalus
    7. Digging My Own Grave
    8. Burn the Fleet
    9. The Flame Deluge
    10. The Lion and the Wolf
    11. Come All You Weary
    12. Child of Dust

  185. Jorge

    My Best-of-The-Alchemy-Index would be:
    1. The Messenger
    2. The Arsonist
    3. The Flame Deluge
    4. Digital Sea
    5. Night Diving
    6. The Whaler
    7. The Sky is Falling
    8. Daedalus
    9. Silver Wings
    10. The Earth Isn’t Humming
    11. Come All You Weary
    12. Child of Dust

But that’s just me being EXTREMELY picky, because otherwise I thoroughly enjoy and love all of the songs.

  186. Melissa H.

katie - thanks for putting the youtube link up for first impressions… the only song i hadn’t heard was second sight.. so thanks! they sound so little.. ha.
hope everybody’s ready for tomorrow :) great day…

  187. johnson

i would like everyone to post their set lists after theirs show just so i can get a taste of whats to come may 27th.

  188. Logan

    My ranking is probably
    Air
    Earth
    Water
    Fire
… although making a ranking for me is pretty futile because I only like Air a hair better than I like Fire, and everything else falls in between. that’s what you call splitting hairs, eh? :)

I’m going to the first show of the whole tour, this wednesday the 16th. hopefully they make the setlist extra special because it’s the first day.

I’ll post as much of the setlist as I can remember.

  189. Matt

I’ve never listened to anything off First Impressions of Identity Crisis before…what a contrast!

Gotta say, modern-day Thrice is easily preferable (for me, anywho) in just about every way. I do like some heavy music, but the stuff that the guys have put out from Vheissu onwards, just about totally eclipses what they were doing before.

  190. Logan

TAITA is right after TAI in my iTunes library… I just finished up listening to Child of Dust when good old Cold Cash came on. I just had to laugh because as brilliant as they are at making their music they’re making now, they were just as brilliant back in the day. Artist is amazing, and forget Illusion. I’ve never heard anything even compete with Illusion, for what it is. with anything pre-IOS I tend to agree with Matt more, where I can still respect it immensely but don’t prefer it.

Vheissu, I think, is still the crown jewel.

  191. holly

i love the first verse to digital sea…the lyrics are so relational. sometimes i feel like the guy dustin is talking about…maybe himself? he he

  192. holly

i love the first verse to digital sea…the lyrics are so relational. sometimes i feel like the guy dustin is talking about…maybe himself? he he

  193. Pete

Man i’m wild i missed the chat :(

Is anyone else here into Fullmetal Alchemist? If not, get into it, the perfect companion to The Alchemy Index.

Oh and does anyone else think that the next record should be like the great elixir or the philosophers stone? All the elements joined together in perfect harmony. Ooo It would be cool.

  194. luke

    dude.
i’ve never been so anxious about the mail coming before.

  195. Logan

    luke,
haha, not even for I and II? I was so anxious for those I was like Ebenezer Scrooge. ask my girlfriend. I was a short tempered brat for a couple days beforehand.

  196. Cameron

Hey Thrice! I’m really excited to see you guys live again…

and for tomorrow to come so i can pick up the record!!!!!!

    looking forward to it.

  197. Cameron

    oh and teppei,

    you are awesome.

just thought id tell you that.

    word.

  198. luke

haha good point, I was pretty bad back then too, I got it two days after the release.

and besides. The UPS guy just left.
    yes….

  199. jon

rankings are impossible. each one is completely different. how do you rank them? by how much they are the element? which ones have the best songs? i dont know how to do it. i like all of them for what they are. im just glad air and earth gave me a pleasant surprise of being just as good as fire and water which i did not expect

  200. israel

@ katie- thanks a lot!! I can’t believe that I didn’t check youtube of all places…. go figure. anyway thanks

  201. Preston

guys.. im not going to be able to sleep tonight.. tomorrow’s christmas.

  202. Katie

    happy thrice day!
its so magical and i cant wait to have a hard copy in my hands.

10 DAYS TIL I SEE THEMMMMMM!

  203. Katie

    ps.
thricey-poo, at the NASHVILLE SHOW, plz play:
a song for milly michaelson, trust, the earth will shake, hold fast hope, child of dust, the sky is falling, and like, everything else ever. you know, just a small request. ;-)

  204. Ben

Rank, obviously, is in order of personal preference. ;)

  205. Eric

    just got back from wal-mart…

picked up the first alchemy out of the box, just like with fire and water. :P
dustin’s artwork for the booklet is awesome.

    cheers everyone.
    today is a good day.

  206. luke

    this cd is amazing.
so cheers to thrice making the bad parts of life good again.

  207. Andrew

Since everyone is sharing their “best of the alchemy index” play list, I’ll throw mine out there:

    (in no particular order)
    1. The Messenger
    2. The Arsonist
    3. Digital Sea
    4. Open Water
    5. The Whaler
    6. Broken Lungs
    7. Daedalus
    8. Silver Wings
    9. Moving Mountains
    10. Come All You Weary
    11. Child of Dust

I would add “The Earth isn’t Humming” but that’s a cover, so I didn’t want to give Thrice all the credit. Still, their acoustic re-vamping of it is pretty genius.

  208. Melissa H.

i don’t think i would ever be able to rank the songs.. ever. which is kind of surprising.. because i’m definitely a list person.. BUT.. i do love how Digging My Own Grave is all jazzy.. i’m a big jazz fan.. and i’ve been so anxious for one of my favorite bands to dabble in it a little.. CWK were pretty much the only ones showing some jazz love for awhile. so, yay for that :) did i see somebody say happy Thrice Day?.. haha.. that’s awesome. after i catch a few hours of sleep i’m going to head to best buy and make my day :)

  209. Scott

Ok, I have a question. Probably around 5 or 6 years ago I had a copy of T&C with i think a Dragon Ball Z clip a the beginning. I have since lost it. I think First Impressions T&C has that clip at the beginning too but the version I had was the IC version with that clip. Anyone have any idea what I am talking about, or even better where i could get a copy of it?

PS I was just admiring my 1 of 2000 original copy of IC on Green Flag records that i got at the release party at Chain reaction all those years ago. So beautiful.

  210. alvaro

    today is the day!!!!!

  211. Ben

You may just be confusing the two — First Impressions has the DBZ clip, and the IC one doesn’t. Granted, I’m not sure why you’d want it there anyway. :)

I have a friend who has a Green Flag copy of IC that he’s had since its release. The guys all freaked out and signed it when they played Warped (Teps just wrote “WOW.” on it)

  212. Ricky Denim

Picked up my copy today :) Artwork is great. One thing that my mate and I thought would have been sweet though, is if some artwork for Daedalus was on there. The imagery would be awesome!
Also a bit peeved at the typo on silver wings. The sonnet lyrics for air were my favorite, so to have the spelling mistake just takes away from it a bit. Wonder if its something that can be rectified in further pressings Thrice?

Album is great though. The CD sounds sooo much better!

  213. Vince

    hey…thought?

the messenger–doesn’t “a wooden saw is quite a way to die” a somewhat…random line?

what if, by chance, it was: “a wooden cross is quite a way to die”?

i wonder if that was the original line…

  214. Preston

    the album is amazing guys..

  215. Matt

    No sign of my copy yet :’-{

Looks like I’ll be keeping hold off the d/l version a little while longer…

  216. Chris

    Matt-

That is exactly the reason I didn’t preorder.
I am just going to buy it at Wal-Mart for way cheaper too.

That’s what I did with the previous release.

  217. Sticky

I preordered it… It was in my hands on Saturday the 12th.. Wow it is powerful, Great GREAT job. Thank you! Look Forward to the show may 12th

  218. Preston

dudes the album is amazing. i held out from listening to most of it and it was more than worth it. i was the first customer at best buy today. The alchemy index is just amazing… see you in Dallas guys.

  219. Matt

I live out in the sticks though, and the nearest place I’d be able to get it is about 25 miles away. At the very least.

  220. luke

i decided to wait and pre orderd it, i have only heard one song from it so far

    no sign of it yet

and i live in the UK so it came out a day early here… someone should get fired for this

  221. matt

    dudes!!!

i can’t get my CD still after work… it sucks!
    AHHHH
    oh well…7 hours to go…
    :)

  222. Jordan

Just got it and I have to say, seeing all for disks together made me feel like all is right with the world today. Amazing stuff.

  223. carlos

hey did thrice put out a new album or something…god i miss the Identity Crisis space punk era…so rad…

  224. Weihsin

    Carlos-

    ahh are you joking dude?

for your question, well YEAH. TODAY is THE day.

    and Past is the past.

  225. zach

I don’t think he meant “a wooden cross is quite a way to die” - I think it got printed right. I doubt they’re going to start killing Christians in the future by crucifixion, but could you imagine how terrible a wooden saw chopping off your head would be? Not sharp, with splinters - terribly humiliating. Not that I really think that’s going to happen, but it’s my interpretation of the song

  226. Chris

    Isaiah 6:8

And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” Then I said, “Here am I! Send me.” (ESV)

  227. Chris

Actually, it’s better if you read it from verse 6

    Isaiah 6:6-8
6Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a burning coal that he had taken with tongs from the altar. 7And he touched my mouth and said: “Behold, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away, and your sin atoned for.”
8And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” Then I said, “Here am I! Send me.”

  228. Trems

just listened to the whole album. Good stuff

  229. Weihsin

Some dude told me that he thinks that

“The Flame Deluge, Kings Upon The Main, Silver Wings and Child of Dust all have the same ending, and they are all the last song on their respective discs. They use different lyrics, but the music progression, melodies and harmonies are the same structure.

I recorded all them in a row and it sounds weird, almost like it’s supposed to be another song.”

WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK ABOUT THAT???

  230. Drew Douglas

Just picked up the new record along with the new Phantom Planet! I stayed true and decided to not listen to any song from Earth/Air so it will be a complete surprise. I am so excited!

  231. Ryan

whoever is going to the show tomorrow, must post a set..

  232. Ryan

looks like your printing crew has trouble with roman numerals.

    ha.

    Volume V?

i thought that would be the secret Heart album and when i played all 5 simultaneously, i would hear the Captain Planet theme song.

    here’s hoping!

  233. Mike

    Yay! I HAVE IT!!!!

I noticed the roman numeral error too, hahaha. Oh well, I guess it’ll be a collectors item when they correct it on the next pressings, right? Haha.

  234. Scott

    Weihsin

Im pretty sure Dustin talked about that in one of the many interviews. I noticed it from Flame Deluge and Kings Upon the Main and then we have all had the silver wings video from the very start so yeah i could tell that. Its definitely the same melody for the last two lines of all four sonnets.

  235. Logan

Yeah, Vince, I think the Messenger is mostly a retelling of the story of the prophet Isaiah, who was indeed said to have been killed with a wooden saw.

I’m going to the show tomorrow. I’ll write down the setlist.

  236. Ryan

that is the point of the sonnets.

they are the most prominent and noticeable tie-in between the 4 discs.

which makes me laugh at all those supposed music experts critiquing the albums and saying they lack “integration” and “crossover”, since they can’t even pick up on that.

by the way boys, Volumes III and IV (V???) are enthralling.

the frodus cover is the most legit cover i’ve come across and you worked it very well.

other stand outs for me would be A Song for Milly Michaelson, As the Crow Flies, and the entire EARTH album.

but by far the most beautiful is SILVER WINGS.

    wow.

    hauntingly beautiful.

i was surprised when Dustin said during the absolutepunk.net chat that it was his least favorite.

    fantastic work, guys!

i will see you tomorrow in SD for the first night of the tour and i’ll be there on the final night on May 30th!

maybe i’ll grow out my beard too…

  237. matt

    yesssssssssssssssss
i just ordered it (and the new Destroy the Runner CD) from best buy, cuz i had a gift card, and i did the store pickup thing.
so now im assured my cds when i get there after work!

    3 and a half hours….

  238. Tom

downloaded it, couldnt wait. aaaah. but pre-orderd the album long ago. it’s worth suporting the ones you like. ;) i hoep everyone does.

and for the album. amazing. totally amazing. i have been lisstening to it nonstop for the past days. and as usual with your songs, they just keep getting beter and better. i cant honestly say there’s any song not as good as the others. just love them all. you are going down in history. this is more than music, thrice is becomeing the definition of life. oh, you give so much joy to my life, i love you so much.

  239. Vince

thanks guys–didn’t get that before. i thought it was random but it all ties together.

  240. kate

    Weinsin-

    “ahh are you joking dude?

for your question, well YEAH. TODAY is THE day.”

    ahahahhahah

Got the album today! Nothing better than holding the physical form of such geniusness in my own two hands.

  241. Scott

    Ryan

Actually Dustin said the lyrics were his least favorite, not the actual song. In an interview either him or teppei said they thought silver wings best portrayed air out of all the songs. Which would lead me to think it was one of his favorites as far as musically.

  242. Mike

I listened through the albums twice… and wow. Absolutely incredible.

Child Of Dust… man… so good.

Now I’m even more bummed I’m going to miss this tour. I bet they play Melting Point Of Wax and Daedalus back to back… that would rule.

  243. Jordan

OK, reading the ap chat and came across an awesome
idea that someone posted. The “Ed should knit some
beanies and sell em, and give the money to a charity
idea,” equals awesome. When I read that I wanted to
give whoever suggested it a really good high five, cus
I def think that’s a wonderful Idea and I would be all
over buying one of those. Yeah. Consider it. I call dibz
    on one. Or two…

  244. Sean

Broken lungs=9/11 New York City world trade center? What do you guys think? I know dustin had mentioned the book before but now i speculate if that song is written from his perspective or from the authors and so called “truthers”?

BTW…Bought the album today. Silver Wings is absolutely amazing and worth the entire wait. Child Dust is really good but IMHO not the best sonnet by far. Lyrically it’s an awsome song (IMHO it’s about Adam in the garden…read the lyrics) and Definitely one of the most unique ideas as far as burying the mic at the end of the ablum.\

“Ashes to ashes, dust to dust, naked I came naked I go”

  245. matt

    sean-
it’s been established that Broken Lungs is about 9/11… even by Dustin himself.

interesting thought about Child of Dust though. I thought the same thing

  246. adam?

    uhhh.

    i don’t have the cd.

because wal-mart f’ing blows and didn’t have any copies when i went.

and there’s no other cd-buying place in town.

    f.

  247. Trask

I just got the album. I’ve listened to the first three tracks and I cannot begin to express how happy I am that I abstained from listening to any of this album (sans “Come All You Weary”) before today.

The last minute or so of “Broken Lungs” is fantastic.

I’ll talk more when I’ve finished it.

  248. Donny

Both Air and Earth are amazing

  249. trevor

    Got the cd today…So good!!!
SO GOOD. I love you guys.
God Bless Y’all for all that you do, it is such a encouragement/joy for me to follow your guys’ stuff.
I’m seeing you tomorrow, and in may at the avalon, can’t wait.
    PS
PLEASE MAKE A LIVE CD/DVD…I mean honestly its about time isn’t it…?
Your live sound is MORE than worthy of a cd/dvd. You guys are humble I know…
    But really…NOW IS THE TIME!!!!

  250. Dan

“A Song for Milly Michaelson” is…wow.

I listened to the Air disc today on the way to work and must have listened to that song like 10 times.

Then I looked up who on earth Milly Michaelson was and Wikipedia told me. Such incredible lyrics.

I haven’t heard a song as beautiful as this one in a long, long time.

  251. Cody

    LOVE IT

  252. HAY

    good job Thrice.

  253. Trask

Wow. This is amazing. The whole Alchemy Index. It’s amazing.

I’m currently in love with Daedalus (the song makes it sound like it would hurt so much) and The Lion and the Wolf (bias; I’m a piano player).

  254. Vince

Child of Dust–makes reference to Adam and the Garden, but it’s about something more. It’s humanity in general–we are all children of dust, coming from the Earth and returning to it one day. We gave up Eden so we could feel more, and so we did–and the earth will take us home soon enough.

  255. Holly

SWEET BEANS. CHORUS FOR CAYW IS THE STINKIN’ BEST…SO POWERFUL. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.

Jesus is much more compassionate than anyone i know.

  256. Holly

ps im going to rent the boy who could fly……….

love the chimes on milly michaelson…sounds like sitting on a porch at dusk while the wind blows making the chimes sing…….yes i love chimes

  257. Ricky

I really love The Earth Isn’t Humming, but I must say, it really DOES sound like it belongs on electric guitar, and this is just a stripped version. Maybe if they would’ve done something new with it. BUT it’s still one of my favorites.

  258. Chris

    Ricky-

I really like The Earth Isn’t Humming too.
It might be one of my favorites from Earth.

I have been a fan of the Frodus version for sometime now and Thrice just made it a buncha times better.

It’s the heaviest acoustic song I have ever heard.

  259. carlos

oops i forgot to mention i was kidding earlier…identity crisis = space pop punk? hmmm dudes i’ve been listening to thrice before thrice was even a band…

    digging my own grave rocks!

  260. Jorge

Vince, I don’t think we gave up Eden to feel more. I think we gave up Eden because like every child we’ve chosen to rebel.

  261. Johnny

Earth and Air are both quite amazing.

    Good jorb, fellows.

  262. Logan

I don’t think anyone’s really mentioned As The Crow Flies yet… wondrous, Iron & Wine meets Jon Foreman and, of course, Thrice. also interesting how Daedalus right before is about a father’s love for his son, and then ATCF is about a nurturing mother (I’m assuming it’s a mother, although now that I think about it I guess it could be a father).

  263. Ricky

Fool…and about Child of Dust…does NO ONE ELSE think it’s about man’s regret?! Clearly it’s also about The Parable of the Prodigal Son. Thrice said the sonnets were lamenting man’s failings, I think this is of taking advantage of life and it being too late.

  264. matt

the sonnets are the element talking to mankind, so no, i dont think it’s about man’s regret.
earth is talking to man in that song.

  265. luke

yeah, but earth could still be trying to hit the chord that makes man regret, as fire did

  266. danny

I hope they play broken lungs on conan, what do you guys think of what them to play?

yeah live dvd would be a dream come true. I can’t believe such a big misprint made the final copies of earth

  267. Ricky Denim

The aus version doesnt have the Earth misprint. It says IV on it. So far all i’ve found is on the air sonnet “and after all *off* this i’m still amazed”.

  268. Andrew

    to danny-

I would laugh to see the audience’s/Conan’s reaction if they played something super heavy like “The Arsonist” or “The Messenger.”

I have only seen Firebreather and Come All You Weary performed live- I would love to see how they pull off The Sky Is Falling.

And in regards to a live DVD, they shouldn’t stop there. I’m vouching for an IMAX BIG SCREEN 3-D VIRTUAL SIMULATOR THRICE EXPERIENCE. How trippy would that be. If U2 and the Stones could have a movie, Thrice could have one.

  269. Murphy

Live DVD would be sweet, but I also want to see more “If We Could Only See Us Now” kind of stuff. Both live and that would be kickin.

  270. Ben

I’m guessing something from Earth will be played on Conan, but you never know. I’ve seen some very heavy stuff performed on his show — awkward for him, but that’s okay. :)

  271. Shawn

3 & 4 rocks gents! much love from london, ontario!

  272. Parke

the sky is falling is very much a balls awesome song. thank you for being the most kick ass band out there.

  273. Craig

The roman numeral error isnt just on the pre-ordered cds, I picked my copy up yesterday from the store and it still has Earth as V. Either way I love the cds, Air is probably my favorite.

  274. Vince

    they’ll probably play either
    come all you weary
    moving mountains
    a song for milly michealson

  275. Jorge

My bet’s on Come All You Weary, which is fine by me!

  276. Craig

I love the album, one of my favourites. Ever. Brilliant work, thanks for the music guys, I bought it first day it was released :D

Cant wait to see you in concert, hope all is well.

  277. Hugo

I’d have to see how they feel about live playing their newer songs.

Come All You Weary is by far the most probable, due to the universal appeal the song’s style has.

  278. matt

i’m betting on Come All You Weary too.
    great song

  279. Katie

anyone seeing them tonight in San Diego??
    send them our love!

  280. matt

    my cousins are…. jerks. haha
i dont get to see them until the last show… :(
it’s so long of a wait!

  281. carlos

misprints happen all the time i mean look at tool albums…undertow was released for a short time with a clear casing instead of the old-school black casing (there’s a picture behind the black casing) or lateralus was released with misspellings…and its happened to just about everybody i guess so thrice probably is no different…just think u’ll have a limited copy that’ll have V instead of IV then u can sell it for hundreds of dollars…go mets

  282. matt

so i just listened to The Alchemy Index all the way through, in order.
it’s amazing. it flows incredibly well.

    i

  283. Hugo

I’ve done that too. The whole thing is so cooler than the already cool parts.

To the people who use iTunes: I have the coolest thing ever (I’ll stop saying cool now)
Since the cover artwork is not disc-especific, I gave each disc artwork that is basically the corresponding part of the band’s main myspace pic.
I made a playlist just with the sonnets and when you have the cycling artwork above, DAMN do the pictures match the lyrics and feels perfectly. Perfection.

Even if it ends up “attributing” a band member to each element (which to me is fine ’cause i think they’re great that way), I still love the myspace pic division for each disc cover. It’s only in my iTunes anyway.

  284. danny

also for those who haven’t seen this from a while ago…

if you go to fuel.tv go to the music room, browse the artists and get to thrice. Their performances of firebreather and the messenger are up there from a long time ago. I barely saw them a couple weeks ago. Awesome though!

  285. holly

    when are they on conan????

  286. Scott

Does anyone remember that book that Dustin recommended about 9/11?

  287. Trask

They’ll be on Conan on May 5, I think.

Air is my favorite right now. I’m still completely amazed by how much Dustin’s voice changes between A Song for Milly Michaelson and Daedalus. He gets the youth through in the vocals for Milly Michaelson, but then Daedalus starts and there’s an immediate change in tone that makes it natural to envision Daedalus lamenting.

The Earth Isn’t Humming is the only song that’s taking time to grow on me. I know I’ll get there eventually though.

  288. israel

Once again, my life is changed and I see things with a new perspective. That tends to be what I deem “The Thrice Effect”, and every time they release new music I change into a better person. Thank you Thrice.
