UK Photos
August 26th, 2008

Just made the monster flight from the UK to Australia. It wasn’t too bad actually. We had a layover in Singapore and it was a bit of a tease since we were technically in Singapore, but were contained in the airport. I’m sure it’s a beautiful city and the landscape was really different and pretty flying in. Jet lag is always fun. I went to bed at 4 am, woke up at 7 am, laid in bed and pretended to sleep for another few hours till I gave up…hence this post. Dustin is sleeping like a baby. I’m jealous.

The shows have been trudging along with their share of problems, but we’ve been having fun despite it all. We had a day off in London and I spent the entire day wandering around town. I spent a few hours at the National Gallery and the National Portrait Gallery which is always nice to do. I discovered several paintings/painters who I really liked that I intended on looking up when I got back, but of course I forgot them all. Thanks memory. It’s always crazy to me to see these paintings up close, to see the actual brush strokes of say, Van Gogh, there in 3d in front of you. It sounds dorky, but you really get to experience the paintings instead of just see them. I was really digging on a lot of Edgar Degas’ paintings that day. Not sure why, but his paintings in particular were really sticking out to me. I also really enjoyed some of the portraits in the portrait gallery. I think it’s an amazing thing to be able to capture all the emotions, experiences, journeys, personality, and character of a person in a painting. It takes a lot to be able to translate what it is to be human and these people somehow pull it off. I couldn’t believe the detail in some of them too. Looked like ultra hi-def pictures from even a few feet away. It seems like painting something in that great of detail would detract from personality, but it didn’t. Pretty impressive. On the contrary, it’s always amazing to me when someone can translate the same thing in just a few rough and seemingly random strokes. Blablahugetangentblabla. So yeah, shows…Reading and Leeds were a lot of fun as well, I thought the crowd was especially good at Reading. Thanks Brits! Hope to see you all again soon.

On the flip side, we’re all happy to be back in Australia. We love it here and are looking forward to our next week or so here. Woooo.

Anyway, as promised, here are some more photos.

Dustin and I went to a cool little pub on the outskirts of London where there was a 3 piece jazz band playing. 3 old english men on piano, trumpet, and banjo. It was great.

Hey, the way you described the abilities of the master painters is exactly the way I feel about you guys and your music creating abilities. Thanks for the photos, they are always enjoyed!
    cheers

As I said before, you were phenomenal at Reading!
I am so glad I’ve seen you live.

Please don’t make it too long before you come back to the UK!
Or come to Reading next year, that would be good!

    That first picture is amazing.

And if you like the super hi-def pictures, you should go to the Yale Center for British Art next time you’re in Connecticut to see The Deluge by John Martin. The painting itself is huge, probably eight feet across and five feet high, but there are thousands of miniature faces on there that could fit on the head of a pin. When we went there on a field trip, my girlfriend and I stood in front of it for a full ten minutes before we realized we should probably go look at some of the other paintings too.

Here is a picture that comes nowhere near to doing it justice:

heh, thought that was Riley writing there until I finished the post. Tepps, you’re so awesome at music, and you seem to be pretty into painting from what I can tell in this post, maybe your musical prowess will transfer to any attempts at painting, and then you could paint the covers for your next album(s)? Just sayin’. Maybe the masterful hands that allow you to produce and perform the best music in the world could produce some pretty spectacular imagery aswell?!

Tour looks like a blast! All the culture you guys get to take in… pretty awesome! I’m trying to visit Europe every other year. This year I was in Scotland… hoping to hit up Austria next! Keep rockin’ the pics!

Sorry you couldn’t sleep, Tepps. That’s no bueno for sure.

have fun on the rest of the tour!

London was awesome…but I was actually more impressed with Birmingham considering it has more canals than Venice does…it was beautiful!

  13. Neil

yeah, London is awesome. was there only a few weeks ago which is quite annoying because if had just gone in the past week then i might have been able to see you guys.

  14. Tom

I like London, I should go there more often.

  15. Ben

Hey, just curious, is anyone else having problems with the ThriceScene forums? Haven’t been able to access them for a while now.

  16. shaun

is that a bottle of Chimay?

  17. Jordan

Ben- Yeah, Thricescene’s forums have been failing me as well. I’m going through some serious Thricescene withdrawal too… I really want to know if maybe I win a poster lol! Hmmm, I wonder what Dwayne’s been up to lately..?

my favorite photorealism painting i’ve ever seen is Chuck Close’s “John”. it’s gigantic and i’ll give my left nut if someone can look at it and first glance say “hey, thats a painting!”

Only 7 hours till show time here in Perth! Got my brother to buy a ticket to the show tonight since I was going on my lonesome - I’m sure he’ll be well and truly converted by the end of the show. This will be my first Thrice show as a fan - I saw you guys last year at the Soundwave festival as I just happened to be in the same area when you guys were playing. Unbelievable - now I’m a huge fan so it will be great to actually know the songs this time.

Glad the weather is good today, was supposed to be turning for the worse from today. Fingers crossed - you should be able to get some good snaps

Back to work - have a great show!

PS - If you go see the Bell Tower, tell me what its like. I live here and I’ve still not seen the bloody thing.

  20. Joe Harman

see you at the metro theatre. i plan on staying after the show. i better meet you guys.

  21. Melissa H.

yay for more pictures! i really liked Teppei’s description of the paintings. it makes me want to visit a museum.

Ben and Jordan: Dwayne has presumably dropped off the face of the planet. we really hope he’s okay, but for now there are some temporary forums going on in a myspace group. check it out, it helps with withdrawal.

  22. Jordan

Melissa H- Thanks for letting me know about the myspace
forums, that probably will help with my withdrawal lol.
And yeah, I hope Owayne is ok too. I’m a super big
worst-case-scenario thinker, so I’m worried about the
    guy, hopefully unnecessarily though.

  23. Sam

im always glad to hear that you guys have a good show when i was there. it makes my day!
